Please share a memory of Ronald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Age 81, of Newport Corner, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 7, 2020 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Site, Halifax. Born in Mantua on February 3, 1939 he was the son of the late Harry and Florence (Thomas) Barkhouse. Ronnie spent his life working in the woods, first alongside his father, then several other companies and lastly for his son, Danny. He was proud knowing he cut the largest beams in the building of Fortress Louisburg in Cape Breton. He was known for fixing power saws and lawnmowers, a skill he excelled at. His garage workshop was his happy place. He loved telling stories and always had a new joke to share. Dad took credit for influencing all his grandsons to drive Dodge trucks. Ronnie was a very devoted husband, a wonderful father, loving grandfather and friend to all. After retirement he and mom enjoyed several trips, Nashville, Newfoundland, Missouri but their favorite was a monthlong trip driving across Canada with friends to mark their 50th anniversary. Ronnie felt he was blessed to still have his two childhood best friends, Dean Baxter and Ralph Mumford. Though the last few years held many challenges, he handled them like a trooper. Ronnie is survived by his wife, Joan (Peach) Barkhouse, Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth, with whom he just celebrated 61 years of marriage in February. Also surviving are sons, Danny (Sharon), Michael (Lisa), Murray (Atasha), daughter, Jennifer (Clyde) DeWolfe; daughter-in-law, Annette Barkhouse. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, he loved them all. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Terry (2018) and sister, Brenda Simm (2019). Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where in Ronnie’s words, COVID-19 has really messed things up so a private funeral service will be held with Rev. Garnet Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ronnie’s memory may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada - Halifax Chapter, 50 Bedford Hwy., Suite 210, Halifax, NS B3M 0J9.
