Obituary of Mark Edward Race

Please share a memory of Mark to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Age 69, of Windsor, passed away on Saturday, April 11th, 2020 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax. Mark was born in St. Thomas, Ont. to Margaret (Taylor) and the late John “Jack” Race on September 27th, 1950. He went to high school at Chatham-Kent Secondary School and graduated in 1968. From there, Mark attended St. Clair College in both Chatham and Windsor, Ont., where he received a Chemical Engineering Technologist Certificate. He worked in various roles for Nova Scotia Power for 31 years, finishing his career in 2005. Mark enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing, playing pool, listening to music, riding his motorcycle, cooking, gardening, being a handy-man, watching sports, attending mass, and of course picking on his friends in the lightest of ways. He loved and appreciated his dogs, especially his closest companion, the late Scout. He enjoyed teaching others and was an active baseball coach throughout his children’s years growing up. Most importantly, he enjoyed the company and presence of his family and friends, in particular his young grandsons. He was honored in retirement from NSP after a long, dedicated, and successful career. He was an athlete in his younger years, excelling in wrestling and football in particular. Mark volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul, Harvest House and Matthew 25 Food Bank. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Jeans), Windsor; sons, Glen and Douglas (Alyona), Calgary; mother, Margaret, Chatham; brothers, John, Chatham and Michael, Grand Falls; sister, Pat, Halifax; grandsons, Nicholas and James, Calgary. He also leaves behind his two adopted daughters, Justina and Fabiola, Kumbo, Cameroon. Mark was a great son, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He was very humble and selfless, he did everything for his family and others and took only what was needed for himself. His work ethic, character, faith, love and dedication to family are traits that will be passed down and remain for generations. He was taken from us early but now is with God. He looked forward to the years that were to come, being with his family and teaching his grandchildren how to fish. He was strong physically, mentally and spiritually and had a large presence only matched by the size of his heart. He impacted so many people and will be dearly missed. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of those at St. Vincent de Paul and the other charities, communities, and people involved in his life. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A Celebration of Life will be held when the restrictions around COVID-19 are lifted and an interment will be held in St. John the Evangelist Parish Cemetery, Wiley Ave. Windsor. Donations in memory of Mark may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please note in comments that donations be directed to the St. Francis of Assisi Conference, Wolfville in memory of Mark Race, (https://www.ssvphalifax.ca/donate).
