Hugh Burgess

Obituary of Hugh Edward Burgess

Please share a memory of Hugh to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Age 95, of Newport Station, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024, at home. Born October 16, 1929, in Newport Station, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Pemberton) Burgess.

Dad would always have a trick up his sleeve, a joke on his tongue or a math problem to make you think about. A pencil or a pen have left many a person bewildered on how he could turn it around in his hands without taking his hands off it.

Fixing vehicles was his passion. Many weekends were spent in his garage changing a motor here or a transmission there. Figuring out how he could make something work with just a few minor adjustments was amazing. His knowledge of mechanics and cars was truly inspiring and he instilled a lot of that knowledge in his boys and sometimes the girls if they wanted to learn. He was a very kind and compassionate man who had a heart larger than life itself.

Surviving to carry on Hugh’s legacy are sons, Herman (Karen) Burgess, St. Peters; Ross (Sandy) Burgess, Scotch Village; Lawrence (Gale) Burgess, Riverside Corner; Steven (Lynn) Burgess, St. Croix and Doug (Heather), Falmouth; daughters, Bea (Eric) Olsen, Lake Paul; Susan, Newport Station and Jennifer (Ken) Barker, Martock; sister, Shirley Benson, Ontario; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews

Besides his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Minnie (Harvey); daughter, Karleen Mingle; son-in-law, George Mingle; grandson, Corey Burgess (in infancy); brothers, Benjamin and Earl; sisters, Hazel Lynch, Margaret Ross and Leona “Joyce” Sandford.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Hugh may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting: www.demontfamilyfuneralhome.ca.
