I never look at obituaries more than twice a year. Today I saw Mr Burgess. We were not friends but we wanted to share a story that we have told dozens of times. More than 20 years ago we headed out camping with our three little boys. We felt a pulling of the hardtop so pulled off highway into the Windsor Irving parking lot. Unfortunately it was Sam Slick days and we only had until noon to get any supplies. We detached the trailer. Our 7 year old was already car sick. We went to tire place. Then the hardware store. A kind man said your tire is seized up. He helped us take off part but we could not get it apart. We had friends who were just ahead and would have no idea where we were. If you have ever camped with excited children, turning back was not an option. Ten am became two o’clock. Became 5 o’clock. The entire time we had a crowd of men and children playing around it in and out of our van watching Disney Movies on the portable VCR. All the while our 7 year old continues to be ill on the picnic table. An employee said “I’m going to call my grandfather.” He has lots of tools. Now we meet a man with a brush cut in his 70s. He introduced himself as Hughie Burgess (the H was silent!). He had some tools but he needed a fire torch. My husband headed to his place with him and they loaded a very large torch into Hughie’s truck. What a crowd we had now. A large blow torch roaring. He was able to remove the seized part off the tire. Places the oil packed piece back and after 8 hours we pulled out and arrived 8 hours late in Digby to our friends amazement. We did our best to pay him. He was adamant he did not want any money. To say we never forgot this man and how he saved our weekend and an amazing whale viewing. We know he will live on in his family. Bless Hughie and he is forever part of my family history due to his kindness.

I offer condolences to the family and friends of Hughie. He was a very nice man and I was always impressed he remembered my name from the beginning considering the size of the family and us being away from NS for so long.
I was also inspired by him, watching him continue to live life to the fullest and not letting growing old slow him down.
RIP Hughie, it was so nice to know you even though it was for brief periods here and there and family gatherings.

From LOUISE, JACK and DAVE: Our prayers for the family for the strength and comfort needed. The obituary nailed it. That described the Hughie we knew. (From JACKIE): Remembering the many summer Sundays that would see our families on a picnic in a blueberry field or at the beach down the shore where we kids learned that its hard to outrun the incoming tide over the flats. And just how many kids and adults can you pack into a sedan? As we grew bigger and Hughie's family increased in number he packed us into the back of a half ton truck and the Sunday drives continued. Yes, Sundays were special when we saw Hughie and Minnie arriving at our little farm on the Station Road. A fun day was about to happen.
