TRIBUTE TO THE LATE WALTER FORREST
FOR YOU THAT DON'T KNOW ME; MY NAME IS TONY GRATTO AND I HAVE BEEN A FRIEND OF THE FORREST FAMILY SINCE MY YOUTH.
I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND MY HEARTFELT SYMPATHY TO THE FORREST FAMILY AND TO ALL FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY AS WE COLLECTIVELY REFLECT ON THE PASSING OF THIS WONDERFUL MAN WALTER FORREST.
ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO THANK WYATT FOR THE INVITATION TO BE PART OF WALTER'S HOMEGOING. THE SPIRIT OF KINDNESS THAT WAS IN YOUR FATHER IS IN YOU AND I AM THANKFUL TO BE CONNECTED WITH YOU AND THE FORREST FAMILY.
MY EARLIEST THOUGHTS GO BACK TO MY PRE-TEEN YEARS WHERE I FIRST CONNECTED WITH WALTER AT THE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH PASTORED BY BISHOP JOHN MEAN WHO I STILL CONSIDER MY PASTOR.
AS YOUNG BOYS WE WOULD ASK THE PASTOR IF WE COULD SIT IN THE SIDE ROOM TO TAKE IN THE SERVICE. PERMISSION WAS GRANTED AS LONG AS WE PAID ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE SERVICE. MANY TIMES THIS ENDED WITH US BEING LED OUT OF THE SIDE ROOM AND MADE TO SIT ON THE FRONT ROW OF CHAIRS DUE TO A MALFUNCTION IN OUR BEHAVIOR. I REMEMBER THERE WAS GEORGE JORDAN, WALTER FORREST, DERRICK FORREST AND ME.
I RECALL A TIME WE ATTENDED HARVEY LAKE PENTECOSTAL CAMP IN NEW BRUNSWICK AND THERE WAS A YOUNG MAN FROM THE MIRAMICHI AREA WHO WE CAME INTO CONFLICT WITH AND HE WOULD CHASE US ALL AROUND THE CAMPGROUND WANTING TO GIVE US A HIGH FIVE MAYBE A HIGH TEN ON OUR FACE.
WE WOULD RUN TO WALTER'S MOM FOR PROTECTION FROM THIS YOUNG MAN'S INTENTIONS.
AS I EVOLVED INTO THE TEENAGE EXPERIENCE AND ON TO TAKING ON A WIFE AS MANY OF US DID, OUR CONNECTION IN A PHYSICAL SENSE CHANGED BUT OUR RESPECT AND APPRECIATION NEVER CHANGED. EVERY TIME I WOULD RUN INTO WALTER IT WAS ALWAYS A REFRESHING TIME FOR THE PRESENT MOMENT AND FOND MEMORIES OF THE PAST. HE WOULD ALWAYS BRING UP HOW HE MISSED HIS WIFE SANDRA WHO HAD PRECEDED HIM. WALTER WAS A DEVOTED HUSBAND AND FATHER.
I WAS IN TIM HORTONS IN WINDSOR ONE AFTERNOON AND IN WALKS WALTER RADIANTING WITH FRIENDSHIP AND HE COMES OVER TO ME AND SAYS "YOUR BIRTHDAY IS NOVEMBER 23" HE WOULD SIT DOWN AND WE WOULD HAVE GOOD CONVERSATION FOR A TIME AND THERE WERE TIMES HE WOULD GET UP WHEN SOMEONE ELSE HE KNEW WOULD COME IN AND HE WOULD REMIND THEM WHEN THEIR BIRTHDAY WAS. I WATCHED THE REACTIONS OF PEOPLE AND COULD FEEL THE RESPECT THEY HAD FOR WALTER. HE HAD THIS ABILITY TO SPREAD JOY TO THOSE HE WAS ENGAGED IN CONVERSATION WITH. WALTER HAD COMMITTED TO MEMORY THE BIRTHDAYS OF OVER 1100 PEOPLE AND STILL PURSUED TO EXPAND HIS BIRTHDAYS DATABASE.
JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE WALTERS PASSING FROM THIS WORLD, I WAS TAKING BISHOP MEAN FOR A DRIVE DOWN TO PEGGY'S COVE AND MY CAR PHONE WAS RINGING AND GUESS WHO WAS ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE, YOU GUESSED IT: WALTER FORREST CALLING ABOUT NOT CALLING ME ON MY BIRTHDAY. I WAS SO GLAD TO HEAR HIS VOICE AND SPEND SOME TIME CHATTING.
MY LAST WORDS TO WALTER WERE WHEN I AM IN THE AREA WE MUST GET TOGETHER FOR A COFFEE AND CHAT.
LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT WITH THIS GOOD MAN, MY FRIEND WALTER FORREST WOULD NEVER MATERIALIZE AS A FEW DAYS LATER I WAS NOTIFIED OF HIS PASSING.
SO HERE WE ARE REACHING DEEP DOWN INTO OUR HUMAN SPIRITS TRYING TO CONSOLE EACH OTHER AT OUR COLLECTIVE LOSS.
BUT I AM REMINDED IN THE SCRIPTURES OF GOD'S LOVE FOR US IN THESE TIMES OF SORROW AND GRIEF AND HOW GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT CAN BRING COMFORT WHEN OUR HEARTS ARE OVERWHELMED.
LEAD ME TO THE ROCK
Psalms 61: 2
2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Grandad was a kind man who had a love for others and made sure to tell them often. Grandad would call to say he was thinking about me and to check in often. He never missed a birthday or special occasion and knew how to make you feel special. Grandad always told me that because his father passed when he was very young he didn’t have a role model to teach him how a father or grandfather was supposed to be. Despite this he was a very loving father and grandfather in all of our lives and we were so lucky to have him. You will be so missed grandad but I know you are so happy to have Nan in your arms again. I love you both so much! Rest easy, until we meet again.

What I will hold dear to my heart about my Dad is his never ending love for the Lord, our mother, his children and his grandchildren. We were so incredibly blessed to have the most amazing parents. I will miss you forever, but I have peace that you are finally reunited with the love of your life. Thank you Dad for the example you set for us and being the most amazing father. I will love you forever until we meet again.
Love always,
Your little girl xo

Denise, Wyatt, Wayne, Wally and family
I like many that have shared great stories of your dad, Walter.
I first met him at Tim Hortons as I used to go there to do after hours paperwork. I remember him sitting down at the table next to me. He introduced himself to me as I did to him. “Tim, are u related to Chuck” Then he proceeded to tell me his bday, wife’s bday, and their wedding anniversary.. I gave him mine and the rest was history.
I would go to Tim’s often and there he’d be chatting up a storm. He’d say there’s August 26th with a smile. Yes sir!!
Eventually I would stop doing paperwork and started to be part of the chats.
Your dad was a kind, caring, and generous person and at the time he may have not knew it but he offered me hope through some very difficult times.
Walter, thanks for those chats!!
Sincerest condolences to you all. Thinkin of you today and in the days ahead.

I met Walter a few times. The first thing I noticed was the peace that emanated from him. Secondly, I was fascinated by his uncanny ability to retain birth dates of people. The next time he met me, he greeted me using my birth date. I was amazed by this special person.
My condolences to all his family. He will be missed.

In the range of twenty years ago I first met Walter. He phoned me at our music store near closing time one day asking if we had recorders. He had suddenly become aware that his grand-daughter needed one for school the next morning. I offered to remain open until he arrived, which was a ten minute or so drive for him. Walter came and bought the recorder, and in his style told me how much he loved his grand-daughter. Afterward he would occasionally drop in to say 'hello' and I soon learned what a special person he was.
He told me about the loss of his wife a few years prior, and how much he still loved her---as much that day as on the day they were married. Before long he told me of his ability to remember people by their birth date, and I think he had about 2300 packed away at that time. From then on whenever I met up with him I'd hear "Hello June 30th." Once the pandemic set in I don't think I saw him again, but always kept a lookout when I was in Windsor. And I learned now that he had moved to Beaver Bank. If I could now speak with him, I'd assure him that June 30th will never forget him.

Apart from him always calling on my birthday, another thing I remember about Walter was his cheerfulness. My wife, Sandra, and I are in a band that has played music at The Elms and Dykeland for many years and he was almost always there, talking to us before and afterwards and thanking us for coming. We will miss him.

Dad will always be remembered in many ways....
When Dad was happy, this was most of the time as he always believed in God's will and purpose for anything that he went through in life and never let circumstances affect his mood. When we went places in his car he would run to the car and sometimes skip like a young child, maybe he was excited to drive or he was just so content and happy, whatever the case, he always put a smile on my face!

Walter was one of my oldest friends.
He was a kind, gentle man. Last time we spoke in July he told me that the two greatest things in his life were: his salvation and Sandra.
And he loved so deeply his children and grandchildren.
Rest In Peace Walter.

To the family of Jan 17th we express our most sincere condolences at the news of his passing. We became acquainted with Jan 17th when my mother in law Sept 4th was in Dykeland lodge. He instantly remembered everyone's birthdays except mine Feb 4th. It was after about the 3rd time he told us of his dear wife's passing on Feb 4th. He was a lovely man who always was up for a chat, out in public at grocery stores or whatever we always greeted each other with hi Jan 17th, hi Feb 4th. He called me and my wife May 4th and my daughter May19th on our birthdays and we were planning to group call him this coming year. On Jan 17th 2025 the phone will be ringing off the hook in heaven as we all say thanks for all the years.

Sincere sympathy to Walter's family. While I didn't know him well, my Dad was a former resident of Dykeland Lodge for a period of time and Walter was always so friendly to him and Dad enjoyed his chats with Walter. My mother used to get such a "kick" out of Walter's ability to remember dates and call people by their birth dates. We all felt Walter brought such joy to the Dykeland's residents and family members.

I have the fondest of memories when I think of Walter, and will always remember his kindness. Every time he saw me he’d smile and say « Hello March 12, daughter of June 30! ». He really had a gift for making everyone he encountered feel special.
His love for his wife was always apparent, and he showed me the picture of her that he carried in his wallet on numerous occasions. He loved to tell stories, and was a fantastic storyteller.
My deepest sympathies to his family at this sad time. I hope you take comfort in knowing how many lives Walter touched.
