Obituary of Michael David Hughes

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with both sadness and a sense of gratitude that we say our good-byes to a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Michael David “Mike” Hughes at age 71, on Monday, March 20, 2023 in the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. He was born and brought up in Windsor, the son of the late Edna (Trerice) and George Hughes.

Mike leaves behind his wife, Barbara (Wilcox) and daughters, Laura (Dylan Kozlick), and Rachael Hughes; four grandchildren, Eva, Judah, Isla and Oliver; brother, George (Linda); sisters, Edna and Margie; sister-in-law, Linda Hughes; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Colleen White; brother, Jim; brothers-in-law, Stewart White, Eric Andersen and Larry Banman.

Growing up in Windsor, Mike spent his younger years playing hockey and baseball with Moe Smith as his coach.  He attended Windsor United Church, singing in the choir, attending and teaching Sunday School and helping his brothers with janitorial chores.  He attended Windsor Regional High School where he enjoyed most sports, especially displaying his prowess as a hockey player (captain of the Windsor Royals).

Mike attended Acadia University playing Varsity Hockey for the Axemen and graduated as a Physical Education teacher in 1972.  He taught at Hants West Rural High School where he was loved by so many of his cherished students. Mike’s empathy for all students was evident throughout his career as an educator.

Mike’s pride and joy were his daughters and is described by them as “the parent who unconditionally loved them; always having their backs when times were tough.”

On Mike’s behalf we want to thank the wonderful, caring staff at Windsor Elms Village for all they did to comfort him through many challenging years of loss. Your kindness is beyond explanation! Thank you!

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 23.
