Mr. Ritchie was truely a wonderful human. His classroom was one of the few places I felt safe and heard as a child. He pushed me to follow my passion for art, in all its forms.
Truely an amazing man and I'm very grateful for the 3 years I had him as an art teacher.

I knew Dave from his time at Mt A . I remember his room in residence as a gathering place of sorts. Somewhere where a number of us would drop by to talk about poetry, life, or just the day's news. He was generous, insightful and funny. I am saddened to hear of his passing.

I have such fond, fond memories of David. Summers together at choir camp in Berwick, countless choral workshops and concerts together, and Nova Scotia Choral Federation events.
He shared his incredible artistic talent in such humble ways.....such as always decorating our name tags at choir camp with these colourful, caricature type representations of the camp grounds and the musicians that brought these scenes to life. I loved these so much I have saved every single one he has ever made for me.
He had a passion for people and for music. But the best part of him was his beautiful sense of humour. Sometimes just a knowing glance his way could send him into uncontrollable fits of laughter. I remember these shared moments of connection very vividly. I will carry these with me forever.
Miss you David.

i am so sorry to hear of David's passing. I'm a second cousin on his Mother's side. When teenagers, I, as one of three cousins, worked with David at Drake Cottages in Bayhead one summer. Our family always visited when the Ritchies were in Malagash in the summer. David was a fun person to be around. I will miss our phone conservations.

I had the privilege of teaching at MRHS with David for several decades. He was a talented intellectual who was true to his profession and his values. Students who learned from David were unquestionably better people for the experience.
Rest in peace, my friend. You lived a life worthwhile.

We attended art conferences together and I will always cherish his sense of humour and powerful presence. Bill and I were honoured to have him as Best Man at our wedding. Mr. Ritchie was easily one of the most interesting and thought provoking teachers at Middleton Regional. I have very fond memories of Art and English classes with him, he was always kind, witty and accepting. We kept in touch over the past few years, sharing pictures and conversations about art and our animals, both pets and the wild creatures we loved to watch in our backyards. He encouraged me to continue drawing and painting. I will very much miss our candid conversations, and hearing about Hope and all the other creatures he cared for and loved. Sending condolences to all of the people that knew and loved him, the world feels less beautiful without him in it.

David and I grew up in the same town and he was a year ahead of me in school. We also sang in Symphony Nova Scotia chorus for the yearly Messiah production. While reviewing year books and local papers it was noted that David contributed greatly as a teacher and with his artistic talents to Middleton Regional High School. He was exceptionally kind and generous with his talents.

David became a best friend almost from the first time we met. Being on committees, organizing school art shows, and sharing our ideas was the beginning of a friendship which evolved into twenty years of sharing our love of painting. David, Martha and I set off every year for a different location to paint. There were many hilarious times as David tried to squeeze himself into a small bunk or offer to sleep on the floor of a tiny cabin. We perched ourselves on rocks and cliffs with our view stretched out before us enjoying the time together much more than our results. I will remember David for all those wonderful adventures we had together but the memory I will hold in my heart will be his painted card every Christmas of himself as a little boy with a red sled at the foot of a snowy hill.

David, family, friends,
David, I know you are up there singing with the angels. I am so grateful for: having had a good visit with you and Hope recently, for your laughter always and on the other end of the line, for our long friendship, for you being the best person to fill my position when I retired, for our many weekend trips away painting with Bonnie; for all the suppers, lunches, inservices and Art Fairs we did together.....so much history and fun. You were a wonderful friend...kind, generous, caring. I will really miss you as will we all.

He was a very good friend and colleague. We laughed about everything, had many drives down the Valley, and meals out. Also, there were always tales about his family and the old days, as a child, at the farm in Malagash and school days in Middleton, where his Father and Mother were both educators. His days of teaching: English, History and Art were relived in the many amusing stories he told with his quick wit and love of life. He bore his ailments well and so appreciated all those kind friends,(many of whom lived in his apartment building or were associated through art) who had the pleasure of helping him as his health was failing. His departure has left a big hole in many lives. I was fortunate to call him, friend.

Mr. Ritchie was an incredible teacher who was very passionate about art. He offered a safe space for many of us “artsy kids” to spend time during lunch and recess and encouraged our creative pursuits. I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. Please know that his passion for the arts lives on in so many of his students.

I didnt appreciate the lessons he provided when I was a student in the 90s. As an middle aged queer man, I have been reflecting on how he provided me lessons about how to live openly and authentically. I never got the chance to thank him for that. He was a special man who positively impacted many people.

Very few people come into your life that truly leave a mark. Today I think back on a wonderful individual who is not only a teacher but also a mentor. After school we became friends and continued on our friendship and Dave introduced me to the art of painting. Many times we went out and painted landscape he taught me that it was not only what you see but also what you feel. Each brush stroke he made was well thought out and the gentle Glide across the paper or canvas with no effort showed a brilliance and breathtaking landscape. Sitting for hours, staying very little. Hearing the ocean waves touch the shore feeling the Cool Breeze on your face and tasting the salt on your tongue. Paint what you feel and also what you see. Dave was a remarkable man who truly cared for others. Some people come into our lives touch our hearts and then leave. Others come into our life touch her hearts, paint the tapestry of love for all to see and then quietly go off to a new adventure. Thank you for making a difference in so many people's lives and for touching the hearts a thousands with not only your art, but also your class and Humanity.

Mr. Ritchie was my art teacher, my English teacher and my drama teacher. He helped me find my voice in every sense of the phrase. Mr. Ritchie forced me outside my comfort zones and helped me become who I am today. He did not let me get away with anything, always called me on my BS and I can’t thank him enough for always expecting my best. He was funny, he was sometimes an ass but I always respected his opinion as it was always brutally honest.
