I used to love to watch my uncle train his horses. His passion for his horses was renowned. He was quiet when I was younger but we later had great chats sitting on the lawn watching the grass grow.

Harry and Lila, I am sorry to learn of Earle's passing. On various occasions, I had the good fortune to chat with Earle when he would be on Lighthouse Road, near Avonport, to check on the land he had for sale. I always enjoyed his conversations. His piece of land across from my mailbox will keep my memory of Earle, fresh and alive in my mind. I frequently enjoy a walk among the beautiful ferns and listen to the bird songs that I experience each time I travel the pathway through this part of his land. I will miss him not coming by.
Sincerely, Sherman Williams

My sincere condolences to all of Earle's family.
I worked with Earle for several years at CKF Inc. He was always a true gentlemen and a great story teller. The time we worked together was the exciting period in his life of raising the famous horse, Rascal Lew J. I heard many stories of his great love of his horses. He occasionally sat me down and explained to me if I would give up smoking, how much I could save, how much compounded interest I would make on the savings. If I had only listened. In later years, I realized he had my best interest at heart.
When you work with someone and come out the other end as good friends, then I consider that an important friendship. Earle was always my friend with an amazing hug that told me he cared about me. RIP Earle. I will miss your hugs.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your father and grandfather Earl.He was a fine person and you should be proud of him.
I first met Earl when I came to Hantsport from Springhill to play baseball with the Shamrocks in 1960 and became one for eight seasons.
During this time he was a member of three Maritime Seniors Championships in 1961,1964 and 1967.Your father was a fierce competitor on the mound and at bat and never liked the word"lose"
One of the best pitching performances that I was ever involved in was in Halifax against the Halifax Cardinals.Although a losing cause but he pitched the entire 16 innings. This was never heard off back then and don'd remember it ever has been repeated to this day and was proud to be part of that moment!
A true Shamrock!

Goodbye to a good neighbour on Schurman Road. Earl was a fine gentleman who always loved to share has recollections of the history of the area. As we were new to the area he was a fountain of knowledge and loved to chat about events, people and, of course, horses. When Janet did her Heart and Stroke canvassing, she always knew to leave time to enjoy an extended conversation with Earl.
Our sympathies to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Each person is given the gift of time on this earth, to live, to love and to leave a legacy. Earle made a true difference to others with kind words, great humor, warm & solid hugs, firm handshakes, sparkling eyes and a memorable smile.
Many times, he would briefly look in the door, ball hat and barn overalls, saying hello as we were visiting, before heading to the barn to tend the horses. Fondly remembered, with deepest sympathy, to his children and siblings.
Thinking of you,

My deepest condolences to Bev, Mort, Amanda, their spouses and grandchildren of Earle, as well as his brothers and sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins...
Earle would tell you most of the Hants county was related to the Schumans, so there are a lot of people who will feel the loss. He kept me appeased of the births and deaths of the family, sending pictures of his great grandchildren.
Uncle Earle was my Mom's, Doris(Fae), big brother. We had moved away and as a young adult, i made it a point to go back to NS every few years. I started to make a point in my early 20's of talking to this man, brother of my late mother... He was very quiet at first, I did not know what to say but once the years past, they were as a niece and uncle would chat.
I remember watching him trot the horses on the dirt track. Later years, he feed the horses and hooked them up to their trainers. He had a special attachment to them and you could tell how they interacted with each other.
Sometimes I visited and we watched as the sun slowly descended over the hills. I did not get to see him a lot as my family moved away when I was young but he was a loving uncle: he made me feel loved and a part of the family.
He gave me, his niece, hugs like he gave people handshakes, firm. Will always remember them and his smile.
Hugs Uncle Earle.

To all of Earle's Family
It is of extreme sadness Janet and I hear of Earle's passing. We/I have lost a great teammate, neighbor, and most of all friend. We are going to miss those early morning driveway chats. Never did you want to be in a hurry once the conversation began and you always knew it would be something of interest before it ended. There are many great stories to be told about Earle, a couple of my favorites. How he would give you a little grin just before giving you that bone crushing handshake as he greeted you. The other, when we were roommates, on a ball trip to Sussex NB. myself being a spry young 18 year old and Earle the wily veteran. Earle says "Now Lloydie, your not going to drink tonight are you"? "NO, Earle". I am sorry to say, I lied. We laughed about that trip for the next 45+ years.
The light no longer shines across the road but the memories certainly will.
Our deepest sympathies

My brother Walter and I were saddened to hear of the death of our cousin Earle and convey our condolences to his family. I was 12 when I first visited our Nova Scotia family with my father Edgar Dill, and my sister Marjory, her husband Everette and brother Allan. Earle was 16 . He was "awesome" as the kids say now- a powerful young man who made tossing hay look easy- no wonder he was a great pitcher! My Walter(now 95) and I stayed on Dill Road in Windsor while touring NS in 1969. A man walking a horse down the street promised to let Earle know we were there. He came over to the B&B and we had a nice long talk about the "old" days. Earl helped us find the Riverside Cemetery where our grand parents and a couple of uncles were buried. Earle and developed a friendship and corresponded regularly over the net. I came up in September,2019 when we got to share a lot of time catching up on our families and activities. I was astonished to learn about the amazing diversity of agricultural enterprises that Earle developed and ran. But it was so clear- the horses- he loved - the horses -he glowed when he told their stories.Earle-still awesome after all those years!

I always enjoyed shaking Uncle Earle's hand and would go out of my way to do so. He had a real handshake unlike many other people, big farmers hands, you definitely knew you had shaken a hand if you had shaken Uncle Earle's hand. (And I knew he was going easy on me.) There was also the pleasant banter between he and my mother (Betty-Lou) and sometimes they might disagree on the particulars of a past event. Sometimes my mother won and sometimes Earle won the point. But, if he said, "I'll have to check my "Book"" then you pretty much knew it was game over. Uncle Earle was a dedicated journalist and kept a very complete record of day to day items and occurrences. He was a good guy and he will be missed.

I had the privilege of working with Earle at CKF. While I worked in sales in Western Canada and then in a Canadian responsibility, our paths crossed frequently. I can honestly say Earle was the “go to guy” if you needed historical context on how and why business was conducted in the manner it was. Whenever I felt my business was getting away from me it only took a chat with Earle to bring me back and refocus me. Personally I will never forget how he reached out to me when he learned of the passing of my son. We all have Earle stories...and they will need to sustain us at his passing. Condolences and prayers to family and friends.

Our sincere condolences go out to the Schurman family. I remember fondly as a small boy, rushing to the ball field to watch the Shamrocks and hometown hero Earle, play ball. Later in life, I was very fortunate to have been a teammate during the latter part of Earle's playing career. Of the many memories, this one stands out for me personally. We were in a tough playoff series in New Waterford. With runners on and down one run late in the game. An older and perhaps, a little slower Earle Schurman, was coming to the plate. The opposing coach decided to switch pitchers to bring in their ace, much to the delight of a packed house of cheering hometown fans. Well Earle hit that first pitch so far, and so hard, that we joked that the center fielder was probably still chasing it as we were driving back to Hantsport.
Earle was a true gentleman, from mentoring young players on the diamond, to young colleagues at work, you could always count on his friendliness and genuine care. He was truly a gentle giant and his smile, his great wit, and his presence will be sorely missed by community and family.

So sorry to hear of Earle's passing. I always looked up to him and he was such a gentle giant. Earle gave me my first job working with him on the farm and in the woods. I remember him playing for the Shamrocks he was a pitcher and played right field when he wasn't pitching. He would practice pitching and get me to catch at the apple farm next door as he had a practice mound set up. I would have been 12 or 13 and was scared to death as that ball came to catchers mitt so fast. He was good. George Carey, Shane Tracey and I used to work for him and it was mostly fun except when we had clean out calf pens or knock the top off the manure piles in January and February when they were frozen. In the winter we would go to the woodlot to cut wood and he had an old trailer with a woodstove in it where we would have lunch and get warmed up. We would have our lunch with us but he would always heat up a large can of baked beans to go with it. They we some good on a cold winters day a morning of hard work. Sometimes in the spring and summer he would take us fishing to Falls lake for trout. When we would finish haying in the late spring in the evening he would frequently take us to the flat rock swimming hole at the halfway river to get cooled off and cleaned up. Such wonderful memories.
He was especially kind to our parents. in their later years he would clean snow from their driveway and would not take any money for doing it.
He has a long and active life some of filled with sorrow but also happiness. Cherish your memories but there will always be a hole in your heart. Rest in Peace Earle. A life well lived.
