To the family of Shirley Rafuse. We wish to send our deepest condolences on the death of your dear Shirley. She and Audrey, along with their older siblings, and Eric grew up in that large extended family of McKay/MacKay cousins in and around Thorburn. (He was raised in Cape Breton.) When Eric’s sister Ona MacKay O’Flaherty died in Windsor, Shirley and Peggy so kindly came to her memorial service. Over the years, Eric and Shirley saw each other a few times, and about fifteen years ago they drove over to visit Donny. An unforgettable visit to be sure. Sincere sympathy to you at your Mom's passing. I'll miss our visits & chats about "the good old days". She reminded me not long ago that she "really liked it when I relieved her so she could go home". She was always very kind & understanding to student nurses & willingly shared her vast knowledge-always with a smile, & I shall never forget that. Patients were lucky to have her as she was an excellent nurse & patient advocate. And told me she delivered far to many babies to count!

She was SO VERY PROUD of both of you & your chosen careers.

Anna and Shirley, kindly accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Mom. We are related and Aunt Evelyn, Thorburn pointed out the obituary to me this morning. Your mother and my Mom were first cousins (Laura McKay Dempster, Thorburn). I had met your Mom years ago, but was more familiar with your Aunt Anne May, she and Mom were very close. We did adventure to Tatamagouche to visit Uncle Charlie and Aunt Tina fairly often, but your Mom would be gone by that time.

I am so very sorry to hear that Shirley has passed away. I first knew Shirley when I went in Nurses Training , in 1957, at Payzant Memorial Hospital. She was a fun-loving, friendly lady and a wonderful nurse ! Always a happy smile and she treated everyone with kindness and caring. Someone so Special will never be forgotten.

Dear Anna and Peggy,
We were so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. I worked at the PMH and then at HCH and learned a great deal from Shirley who was one of the most compassionate nurses that I encountered. Not to mention her love of a great joke and her laughter that often rang through the halls.
One of the last times that we saw Shirley was at Sobeys where she was sitting on the bench waiting for Peggy. She and Mum were laughing at Peggy and I and as we parted she said "oh Margaret, what are we ever going to do with these girls" . She and Mum had a great chuckle over that.
We are sure that your families will miss her so, the laughter and that twinkle in her eye!

Your mom was a treasure. I always enjoyed working with her at HCH as she always seemed to be able to cheer me up when things weren’t going so well!
