Dear Monique,
Our hearts are with you and your family. It so saddened us to learn of Willard's sudden illness and passing. We were privileged to have met him a few times at Moe's Place, and honored to receive a donation of one of his fine-crated notebooks for a charity auction being held for one of my son's ailing football teammates. Dear Monique and Wood Family:
Dianne and I were both saddened to hear of the passing of Willard. Willard was a stand-up person who gave a lot to this world. I am honoured to be able to be a friend. In November Willard and I stopped to chat together while both walking on King Street. He always had an interesting tête-à-tête manner that wanted you to continue banter all day.
I must say that the Horton House celebration for such a wonderful man’s life sounded like something right-on-the-spot for Willard.
I have to apologise for the belated nature of my condolence and non-attendance at the Wake but I have been burdened with persistent health issues that have inhibited me greatly.

My sincere condolences to the whole family. I had the utmost respect for Willard and enjoyed his sense of humor , his commitment to community and his moral compass! He was a wonderful man with a generous spirit, a heart as big as he was tall!!...and a soul that embodied his gentleness and human fragility. He was, indeed, a gentle giant!....that loved to ride a bike! I'm guessing he's on a beautiful road now. One with very few potholes!

I first met Willard in a learn to run program. His calm and vibrant energy drew me in right away. We chatted the entire time that we slowly jogged together.
Being relatively new to Windsor, Willard warmly welcomed me in and quickly became past of my new community-support circle. It wasn’t anything specific that he did or didn’t do to to make me fall in love with my new home but rather just his nature; I felt welcomed and encouraged in his presence.
Through the run club, I met the Wonderful Monique as well and started recognizing the duo biking past my house. Over the years it has become one of my families favourite daily rituals to watch them whiz past my house, ding the bell, and give a wave. My kids will actually ask “was that Willard?” when they see any biker.
When Cory and I decided to get officially married, we knew we didn’t want the traditional wedding with white-this and fancy-that. However, I desperately wanted my grandfather to be honoured in the ceremony. My grandfather was more like a father to me, and like Willard, had a kind and gentle nature which made me feel content and happy.
My grandfather had a giant oak tree outside of his house that I had spent my childhood in and that tree had become the symbol of my happy childhood. Cory and I were interested in having our wedding bands made from the tree and we approached Willard with the idea. Although he was nervous as he never made rings before, he understood and appreciated the idea and agreed to try crafting the rings. Through the process, he listened to me tell stories about the tree and cry about how wonderful my grandfather was and how much I missed him. He not only created the most amazing bands, but also created other pieces of art from the branch that I was able to gift to my family. It meant the world to us.
One day long after the wedding, I hear a ding of the bike bell and find Willard at my door. He had one last gift for me. He carved a Celtic cross from the last piece of wood and had a beautiful poem for me too. He took the time to create something for me that i would cherish and wanted nothing in return. This is exactly why Willard was amazing.
I will miss so very much about Willard but I want to make sure that I and our community carry on what Willard believed in: an active and vibrant community, kind and welcoming community members, and genuine and whole-hearted giving.
Thank you Willard for crossing my life’s path, for the lessons, the warmth, and the gifts you gave me. I will forever be grateful for knowing you.

I met Willard at Kempt Shore Music Festival and instantly drawn to his kind, respectful ways, he told me of his want to get healthier for his family who he loved dearly.
