Dear Debbie and family,
I am so very sorry to hear about Bob, your dear husband, father and grandfather. I know he was a very special man and the space he leaves in your lives is huge and must feel overwhelming.
He was a fine person who made a real difference in this world and he will not be forgotten as many people all over the country share in your grief. He left you far too soon and should have had years more with his family.
Please know that I am thinking of you and send you my best,
xo

Tony and I are still trying to take in this news, which we heard only last night (January 20). What a loss to you, Deb and Laura, to your larger family, to the labour cause, to critical literacy, and to us in the New Democratic Party.
Our thoughts are with you. Bob will always enrich the memories of those fortunate to know him.

It was such a pleasure to get to know Bob after your move to Nova Scotia, to share our histories in Octopus and Red Herring and to compare notes on current events. We felt welcome and encouraged to carry on when anyone in our family visited Between the Lines. Bob brought warmth and depth to movements he supported and those to which he belonged. We always heard how important Deb and the rest of his family were to Bob. He made lasting contributions and great memories for many. Deepest condolences on your loss.

I was so incredibly shocked and sorry to hear of Bob’s passing having just seen him at Octopus over the holiday season. I was always shy around Bob, but during his last two visits to the store we had begun talking and I was looking forward to future conversations. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. May you find comfort in one another and in the knowledge that Bob touched all of the people around him.

If you lived in Halifax before 2011 and you happened into "Outside The Lines: Books for Critical Minds" on Quinpool Road, you would have met Bob. I didn't really know him, but everytime I went into that store (and it was often) I got to know him and another social justice issue a little bit better. Outside the Lines played a pivotal part in exposing me to progressive and critical books, issues, authors I wouldn't have come into contact otherwise. They were at community film screenings we hosted with topical books. They hosted talks and book launches. They had books about everything. I own a few of those books. They helped shape my worldview. I was saddened when the book shop closed in 2010 and now am doubly saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I hope he knew the tremendous impact he made by operating Outside the Lines here in town. I am grateful and I'm sure many others are too. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, brother. Debbie and family, our sincerest condolences to you.

To Debbie and Family, my heart aches for you. My most sincere and deepest sympathies.
Bob meant so much to so many of us, and because of who he was he probably never realized the impact he had on our lives. Or he was too modest to accept the thanks and accolades.
He was a touchstone for me when Ottawa became too Ottawaie. He was the one I could count on to keep things real.
It was Bob who made me truly believe a man could be a feminist. He was an ally for those who were oppressed. He was a true comrade, wanting fairness and equality.
More than once when I was down and ready to give up, Bob made me remember why I became a union activist.
He was the real deal.
Thank you for sharing your partner and father with the rest of us.

Debbie and Family,
We are so sorry for your loss and the loss to all of us. We got to know Bob through the bookstore on Quinpool (and sure missed it after it closed) but turned out we had backgrounds/overlaps and friends in the past, in common (Octopus books Ottawa etc.) What a loss to the world. So shocked and hoping that you have the time and resources to grieve in whatever way you need to. . . Our deepest sympathy to all of you and know that we have fond memories of Bob. . .

Dear Bob ... you will be SO missed! With a heart as big as all outdoors, a generous spirit, a quiet dignity and a depth of courage ... there is no one like you Bob. You have been the most wonderfully sensitive and loving husband for Debbie (every woman should be so lucky!) and a rock solid support for the children and grandchildren.
Thank you for your kind thoughtfulness at all times, your endless patience and strong leadership ... and your unshakeable vision of a just world.
And let's not forget your wicked sense of humour! (See picture above.)
I miss you! We all miss you! And we're going to keep on missing you ... and loving you!

How to remember this good man? For he was a very good man indeed. He had encapsulated within himself the best of the Union Movements traditions and goals. He and his life partner waded deep through the obsticles of daily life and the fight for justice. He did this unselfishly and determindly. He could be tough at need but never forgot kindness. He served in both elected and apointed capacities in the Union movement, always where he could help others as well as educate. We shared his love of books. We shared a contempt for bullies be they social, political or economic. We shared the belief that every person deserves both social and economic justice. I remember that once even though he was a vegitarian he BBcued steaks for an event, because it would help. I will always remember his good cheer and laugh, a full bodied laugh. He was a freind, as well as someone I looked up to. He is not a person to be forgotten.
