Condolences to Betty and the family. Although no longer living on "the island", I will always be proud of that time and upbringing. Everyone there were part of one big family, knowing each other and having fun together. So when one grieves, we all grieve. Betty, you and your family are in my family's thoughts and prayers. I am saddened at the passing of my friend Bert Hazel. Bert and I worked together for over 20 years as Trustees for Labourers' Local 615 Trust Fund as well as on many other construction labour relations issues. We attended dozens of Conferences together and I spent much of the time with him. He was always an excellent companion and a great sidekick. Bert is a generous , kind, and strong man, always absolutely true, honest and totally dependable - the salt of the earth. His powerful set of ethical standards guided his every decision and I and everyone around him could depend on him to point us in the right direction and make the right choice. Bert stands tall in my mind as a responsible, dedicated, hardworking and totally honest human being who is not found easily today. I sought his advice often and we talked and tried to solve problems on many occasions. His practical, no nonsense and often humorous approach to problem solving was always helpful. Bert got to know members of my family , my wife Betty , my son David who worked as a Labourer, and my daughter Andrea and they all have fond memories of Bert. We hung out together at a number of conferences. We will never forget the day that Bert offered to guard our room at night the day after we were robbed at knife point in our hotel room in Nassau in the Bahamas. All of them asked me to express our condolences to Betty, Brenda and the rest of Bert's family members. I know how much Bert enjoyed the great outdoors and so when I am out walking or hiking I will remember Bert.
