Please share a memory of Bertram to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bertram "Bert" James Hugh Galley, age 96, of Dykeland Lodge, formerly of Windsor and Three Mile Plains, Hants Co., passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, December 5th at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born on May 11, 1919, in Three Mile Plains, he was the last surviving son of the late Allen E. and Ruby (Shanks) Galley and faithful husband of the late Jean (Veinot) Galley. As a veteran of the Second World War, Bert joined the Carleton and York Regiment of New Brunswick at the young age of 22. Trained in Aldershot and Liverpool, England he joined the front lines where he courageously fought for two years as a Sapper manning a Bren Gun. Although Bert kept these war time memories close to his heart, his family had the privilege of hearing more of these stories in his later years. In 1981, Bert retired after 30 years as a driller for the Fundy Gypsum Company. He was a loyal and dedicated warden of Christ Church Anglican in Windsor for 43 years. During retirement Bert was an avid bread maker, scrap-booker, and would often be seen keeping the streets of Windsor free of litter. One of Bert's recent proudest moments was meeting his fifth generation great-great grandson Jase Parker. He is survived by sisters, Kathleen "Kay" Davis, Three Mile Plains; Laura "Connie" Lowthers, Three Mile Plains; daughters, Mary (Bernie) Rafuse, Windsor Forks; Linda Ritcy, Lawrencetown; daughter-in-law, Sheila Galley, Mt. Denson; four grandsons, five granddaughters, nine great grandsons, four great granddaughters and one great-great grandson. Besides his parents, Bert was predeceased by his wife, Jean Minnie (Veinot) (1999); son, Bertram "Bertie" Galley (2004), son-in-law, Jim Ritcy (2002); brothers, Clarence, Roy, Guy and Alex Galley; sisters, Dorothy Shiers and Edna Thorpe. Bert's family would like to extend a special thank you to special friend Sheila Hunter, room-mate Bill Armstrong and all the staff at Dykeland Lodge for all the loving care. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Monday, December 7. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 8 in DeMont Family Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. David Curry and Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. Private family interment will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. A reception will follow in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre. Donations in memory of Bert may be made to Christ Church Anglican, PO Box 2664, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 or a charity of your choice.
