David's grade 2 class, Crichton Park Elementary School, 1990-91
Our son Evan is 2nd from left, back row. He only had the adored Mr. Fry for four months, since we returned to B.C. then. He felt seriously shortchanged--and rightly so--that his lucky, lucky sister Torill had Mr. Fry for the whole previous year.

Thank you, dear Alex, for calling to let us know that wonderful Mr. Fry, our kids' grade 2 teacher, left us in October.
In the praises sung of him, we need to add a rousing verse about how loved he was by all the precious little ones he taught at Crichton Park Elementary School. He saw them as big spirits, not little people, and he taught to their gifts, bringing out the best in each of them.
Moreover, he stayed friends with families who reached back to him. How lucky we've been to be among those he chose to connect with long term, especially since we returned to our west-coast roots in 1991. In 1993, on a return trip to Halifax, we met his family for a picnic and swim at Boutlier Cove -- what fun and bright memories. And for all these years, we've shared Christmas news and twice, got to see David out here, on his annual swim-team trips to Victoria.
We had supper with this this last February in Victoria. What a joyous, deeply meaningful reunion. What a beautiful man--clear, straight-shooting, finely-centred, with values we can all aspire to.
To Alex, whom we never met, we send our gratitude for the rich life you gave to and shared with David. And for a difficult phone call to make, yet so very important. Together, everyone who knew him can keep David shining, each in our own way, through us.

I just learned tonight (Nov 21)of David's death and I am so very sorry. I knew David because he was a law student of my partner's and then I used to see him regularly at Dalplex at the pool when I would go for a swim. And I know Alex from many years ago. David was such a lovely person, always a positive, warm, light-hearted and genuine presence. I can see why he was such a successful and highly regarded coach. It was always a pleasure to see him and exchange a few friendly, cheerful words. I didn't know he was ill. I am sure he faced it with courage and grace. My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to all of you and especially Alex who must miss him terribly.

My deepest condolences to Alex and the Fry family,
We have been so blessed by David's life of integrity that there is no full measure of words to explain the impact that he has had on us all. David's voice of reason and justice inspired and soothed and his pleasant spirit welcomed us to laugh and share and feel as one. For me. it has been the greatest of honors to be able to call such a fine and noble gentleman my friend.

I attended Dave's retirement party from the Dalhousie Swim club 5 years ago. That was the last time I embraced him and said "Thank You for everything". Thanks for teaching the true meaning of sport that reflected many life habits outside the pool: hard work, commitment, dedication and reap the benefits of your personal best to succeed.
I was one of his many first swimmers on the Dartmouth Crusaders. DYC was the team that started his legacy as Super coach for years to come. You will be missed but even more, you have touched so many lives, you will never be forgotten. With Love and true appreciation, Froggy.

David and I met many years ago when we were both young teachers. We also had the Wolfville connection. Every December when his thoughtful card arrived in the mail, I always uttered the same remark - it must be Christmas because I have my card from David Fry. I will really miss saying that same old thing this year.
David lived a very full and rewarding life with Alex and they had many adventures together. My thoughts are with you now and in the days ahead. Take care Pat

Dear Alex,
How sad to lose David. I knew he wasn't doing too well this past summer. After 38 years, it will surely leave a void in your life. I always enjoyed your little visits while running or walking and especially this summer when you walked with me on the Bideford road. My Sister, who lives in Halifax told me that she had read the obituary in the Halifax paper today and related it to seeing Bideford. As you probably know I sold the Cottage so not sure if I will be back to PEI very often, so please accept my condolences for your loss. "When someone you love becomes a memory the memory becomes a Treasure.

I am extremely saddened by the loss of David. I met him and Alex over 30 years ago when they were customers of the restaurant, The Anchor, where I worked. We laughed and joked, and when I became pregnant, these wonderful men took a kind and supportive interest in my progress.
David was the more quiet, almost shy, of the two. These men were and still are my heroes. I loved and love both of them.
Alex, I feel your loss deeply. Prayers are being said for you and David's family.

Two young kids from small towns meet at Queen's university.
Same courses studied and we ran an after school Drama club together. After hitch hiked from Kingston to Wolfville,i stayed with David's family as well as he with mine in Sherbrooke, Que.
We kept in touch at Christmas and connected again especially after my retirement. We( Alex, Dave and I ) travelled to Newfoundland, Cape Breton and again another great visit in Halifax. Dave and Alex also visited Newmarket on one of their many travels. Last visit with Dave late last May - convocation at Dalhousie, lunch, talk and hugs. Loved this guy and HE was the best!
Alex and family love and sympathies. I know that he will be remembered as I have met kids coached by him in Toronto area and he is always the centre of conversation. He made a difference and will continue to inspire by the memory of all that he represented.

Dear Alex and to all of David's family and friends,
My sincere condolences. David was so warm and sincere. My heart is heavy knowing he is no longer here. He has melted into the hearts of everyone he's known with his goodness, his hard work and his genuine caring for others. I've known David from the 70's onward. He was always a big help and resource when I worked my short 3 years stint as the ED of CASA for N.S. I would delight in seeing him running the roads of Halifax. His run was very distinguishable. David always answered the call to volunteer and encouraged his Dalhousie U Swim Team as well. They enthusiastically volunteered at our breast cancer fundraiser each year. I am so grateful and enriched to have known him. His presence on this earth will be so dearly missed.

I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to David's family. He was a great person who affected countless lives. For many of us, swimming was only a short fragment of our lives, yet it remains an incredibly important part of who we are. David was my coach in the late 70s, and certainly the best coach I had, a fact shared by most of my teammates. He was also a figure during a period when I made great friends and he pushed me to push myself, which must have frustrated him. I was defensive, prickly and self-righteous, so the task was not an easy one. One of my best memories was swimming in Montreal where we created a strategy for a 400 freestyle race, and I swam it to perfection, perhaps my best race ever in that respect. I also admire the breadth and richness of his life. He improved life for so many through swimming and his compassion. A life very well lived, and lived with the love of Alex and David's family, friends and swimmers. You can never forget such a person, nor will we. He remains within us all, a permanent touch upon us.
