MUNROE, Cecil Herman - 93, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2012, in the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax, with his family by his side.Formerly of Brooklyn, Queens Co. and Windsor, Hants Co. Cecil was born in Milton on August 12, 1918, a son of the late Owen and Lottie (Whynot) Munroe.At the age of 17, he left home to work at the "Bucket Factory" in South Brookfield. While working there he met and married Jessie Mansfield in 1942. Cecil served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Italy during the Second World War and was wounded three times. After his discharge from the Army, he began working at the Best Yeast/Standard Brand plant in Brooklyn, N.S. When he retired from this job, he became a building super in various buildings in Halifax and Windsor. Cecil loved to watch wrestling and the Blue Jays on TV. He also loved a good game of cribbage. He was a member of the Brooklyn Baptist Church, and Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, Windsor.Cecil is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Richard) Barkhouse, Halifax; grandson, Rick (Angie) Barkhouse and great granddaughter, Amy Barkhouse, Smiths Falls, Ontario; granddaughter, Heather Barkhouse (David Rogers), Dartmouth; and his sister, Dorothy Lewis, Liverpool. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, the former Jessie Mansfield (2007); brothers, Irving, Maurice, Howard; sisters, Verna, Elva and Hazel.The family would like to thank the staff at Rose Marie Residence Home Care in Hantsport where Cecil had resided for the past three years, and also to Dr. Bethune and the staff on 5 East at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax.Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 4. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5 in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Jeffrey G. White officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. Interment will be held in Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Springfield, Annapolis Co. Donations in memory of Cecil may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, 6960 Mumford Rd., Suite 225, Halifax, NS B3L 4W2 or to a charity of one’s choice.
