Obituary of Violet Z. Rampersad

Please share a memory of Violet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Violet Zaitoon Rampersad (née Khan) on 26th October 2013 at the age of 87 years. Violet was born in Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago, on 17th March 1926, was married to John Vincent Rampersad in 1943, and at her passing on 26th October 2013, they were just a few months shy of celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary. In 1981, they immigrated to Halifax. In time, a summer cottage on Lewis Lake became a year round residence and, in the words of Violet herself, her own little piece of paradise. Violet’s passions in life were gardening, cooking, and sewing. She took enormous delight in her family and was especially proud of how people from many backgrounds had come together over the years to produce a "family of the future." Violet was predeceased by her parents, Shorab and Habiban Khan (née Ali) and her sister, Azina Khan, in Trinidad. She is survived by her husband, John Vincent Rampersad, her daughter Zenora Rackham (David Rackham) of Halifax, son Vincent (Rudy) Rampersad (Fara Joseph) of Mississauga, daughter Vida Amin (Razif Amin) of Marabella, Trinidad, daughter Merle Mohammed (Ralph Mohammed) of Halifax, brother Amral Khan (Zakiya Khan) of St. Joseph, Trinidad, Anwar Khan (Jean Khan) of Diego Martin, Trinidad, eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a host of highly valued but far too numerous to list relatives in Trinidad, Canada, the United Kingdom, etc.The family owes an enormous debt of gratitude to a legion of people, all of whom were very generous in their support of Violet and John over so many years. In particular, the family acknowledges and greatly appreciates Dr. Jalal Hosein for his compassionate and continual care over many years both as medical practitioner and family friend. Likewise, Gwen Walsh and Gordon Peach, the most extraordinary of neighbours and friends, were always available to lend support and comfort in fair weather and foul. The family would also like to acknowledge and extend their appreciation for the professional courtesy and competence of the EMS team, the fire and rescue contingent, and the RCMP officers who made the trauma of the evening of 26th October 2013 somewhat easier to bear.Cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate the life of Violet Zaitoon Rampersad, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Friday, 1st November, at St. Paul’s United Church, 293 Etter Road, Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia B0N 1Z0, Rev. S. Allison Davis presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Paul’s’ United Church, the Cobequid Community Health Centre in Lower Sackville, or any charitable organization of your choice would be gratefully received. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317).
