I have only fun memories of my uncle . His light-heartedness and sense of humour made being with him sheer joy. One memory that stands out is when my cousin, Nancy was in a parade while living in Wolfville. She was sitting like a little princess, waving gracefully, and I was standing beside Uncle John. All of a sudden , he yelled out ‘Hey Nance!! ‘ and she looked startled and then a big grin came over her face . Nancy and I laughed about that for years. We will be thinking of the family tomorrow as you remember a loving father, terrific uncle and special friend . Hugs and love, Joanne and family , Brian and family , Aunt Audrey .

John’s presence at the Dykeland Lodge will surely be missed. He always greeted you with a smile. He was a kind, generous soul and a good long-time friend to my dad Merle Carey. They would often walk together outside the home and they were lunch buddies. He had a great sense of humor and always managed to put a smile on my face even if I was having a bad day. The heavens will definitely be brighter with John’s presence. Paula

The Hoogerwerf Family:
I am so sorry to hear of your Father's passing. I have fond memories of his friendly personality and wonderful sense of humor. I can remember him stopping to say hello to me on his way to work when I was a preschooler playing in the front yard when we lived by the mill. I enjoyed chatting with him at Uncle John's when home visiting my mom. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I have so many happy memories of John over the years. Visits to him and my sister Shirley were always a very important and enjoyable part of my trip home to Nova Scotia. John always made people feel very welcome in their house, he loved conversations on any topic. I had many long conversations with him out in his “smoke room.” We all loved our food and especially a good lobster feed and there were many of those. After Shirley passed and John had moved into his new residence, we would stop there and see him whenever we came through. Brother and I had driven home this past year in May and we stopped and had a nice visit with him then. I liked to call him ( usually on a Sunday morning) and have a nice chat with him. John, you will surely be missed by me and certainly the rest of your beautiful family. I hope you are back with Shirley and Joe. Love you lots, Rest Easy.

My sincere condolences to Becky, Susan, Sean and Andrew....sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing...such a good guy with a great sense of humour. I was his paperboy back in the mid 70’s on Chestnut Ave...pumped lots of gas into his two cars that I think he was the first to own in Hantsport....the first being a blue 1973 two door Honda Civic and then later his wine coloured 1976 AMC Pacer....both were very small but he fit all four kids in the back seat...most of the time he had pencil behind his right ear....sorry for your loss.
