Obituary of Lawrence Milton Haines

Please share a memory of Lawrence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Age 80, of Ellershouse, died peacefully Tuesday, September 17, 2024 in Ivy Meadows Continuing Care Home, Beaver Bank. Born in Windsor on May 12, 1944, he was a son of the late Milton and Bertha (Whitehead) Haines.

Lawrence was a great storyteller and loved to chat. He grew up on the Windsor Back Road hanging around with buddies from the Trider, Wells, Mason and O’Leary families. After leaving there he and a few buddies moved to Toronto, where he remained for around 20 years, marrying and starting his family there. He drove a truck and forklift while working in Toronto and then was a building supervisor for a few years while there.

After he and is wife divorced, he raised his boys himself. Lawrence loved to yardsale and find himself a good deal. He enjoyed a good piece of red meat including steak and roasts and enjoyed a good meal. It was always a bonus if a meal ended with chocolate cake, date squares or pie. He also thoroughly enjoyed family dinners and always wanted to know if it was “real” food as he was into eating wholesome foods. He will be fondly remembered for his ability to make delicious homemade whole wheat bread.

Lawrence was always one to offer advice, regardless of if you wanted it or not. He believed greatly in natural medicine, homeopathy and naturopathic ways. He formed a close bond with Kelly-Jean Souva over the years, as she helped him on this journey. He was often known to offer advice to others on taking “good” vitamins (only a certain kind would do) and getting oneself a reiki session.

We would like to thank the Dempsey’s who were always around helping Dad and giving him a hand with things, as well as giving Dad things to do to keep him busy. They became like a second family over the years.

Lawrence is survived by sons, Albert (Teresa) and Eric (Jennifer Eldridge); grandchildren, Emma and Sydney; sister, Ruby Woods; as well as, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Milton; brothers, Reid (in infancy), John, Raymond, Calvin, Garnet and Ira; sisters, Gloria, Blanche, Jennifer, Linden Phelan and Marion Johnson.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A Celebration of Life will be held 2-4 p.m., Sunday, September 29, in the Ellershouse Community Hall, 429 Ellershouse Rd., Ellershouse. In lieu of making a donation in memory of Lawrence, go get yourself a bottle of vitamins, an acupuncture treatment or a reiki session.
