To Alison, Daphne and Ian.
Hearing of Hugh's passing and listening to much of the service online, it truly took my breath away. I was so fortunate to have had a small glimpse into this wonderful man's character.
Of course Alison also made a lifelong impression on me. Very much thinking of you and your families, with so many memories and so much to be grateful for. Take care of each other. Nancy Delahunt (Taylor)

I played with Hugh in the Four Seasons Orchestra and also in a smaller ensemble called The Windsor Winds. He always put his heart and soul into what he was doing. We rehearsed at his house once when he had put his back out and couldn't sit up just then and I wondered why he didn't just miss the practice but he said he wanted to be a part of the group by listening and joining in for the snacks afterward!-----Kathy Ross

I first met Admiral Mac Neil in 1982 upon joining the Standing Naval Force, Atlantic, as Commanding Officer of the US ship in the NATO squadron. From the "git-go," you knew that the then Commodore Mac Neil was a superb leader who became a personal friend and mentor. The hospitality that he and Alison showed me on my visit to their Wallace Point home was warm and true! Peace be with you and your family, Admiral Hugh!

From Colonel ( Retired) and Mrs. ( Cheryl) Michael D Morin OMM CD RCAF
We are profoundly sad to hear of Hugh’s passing. I was Executive Assistant to the Admiral when he was the Canadian Forces’ Deputy Chief of Defence Staff. During one of the most tumultuous periods of change and challenge for Canada and the CF, Hugh was the right man, in the right job at the right time. He was an outstanding leader and friend to both Cheryl and I, allowing us a brief glance into his and Alison’s fascinating and exceptional life. This incredible man was loved and will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to Alison and all members of Hugh’s family. I remember Hugh as a delightful man, a true gentleman who was always eager to experience and support new endeavours in his life. As director of the Four Seasons Orchestra, I remember Hugh as a member of the clarinet section: always keen to figure out new fingerings, to go home and practice the “hard bits” . His humour and good nature always added to the pleasure of our rehearsals!
Hugh will leave us all with wonderful and treasured memories.

Dear Alison and Family;
My deepest sympathies to you and all of your family.
It is many years since Anne and I were last with you and Hugh; and my ability to recall those times has greatly deteriorated since Anne's death a year ago.
But I recall you both as a warm and kindly couple; and have the fondest memory of Hugh as a very wise naval officer and a great leader who inspired everyone who had the pleasure and honour to know him.
May the happy memories of bygone days sustain you and bring you peace.

Dear Alison and family
“Tonikins” (in heaven) and I are thinking of you and the wonderful man you married 68 years ago. Our life was enriched measurably by my being fortunate enough to serve as Hugh’s EA in Norfolk and we were, and remain honoured that you both considered us friends. Your bond with Toni was a cherished part of her life and she thought of Hugh as a favourite uncle! He was the finest Naval Officer I ever served with and he will be missed. I am glad you have such an amazing family supporting you in this journey.
Love, your friends (Toni and) Errol Collinson

Hugh was a terrific asset to our community. We were very fortunate to have him and his many contributions. He was always cheerful and a pleasure to speak with. I am optimistic that the legacy of his efforts will be long lasting.
I regret not knowing him during his military career, but based on the listing of his accomplishments his impact must have considerable there also.

Dear Daphne and Family,
Losing someone you love is like losing a part of yourself. But hopefully, every time you recall a moment of laughter with your Dad, or find yourself doing something that reminds you of the times you spent together, you'll feel that part of you again. Hoping you will one day find comfort in the remembering.

Vice Admiral (ret'd) Lynn Mason posted a condolence

Admiral McNeil was an extraordinary leader as evident every time he was in charge. The best example was the commanding officers, from his time as Commander of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic, voluntarily gathering every year to relive what they had experienced during his time in command.
I had the good fortune to serve under the Admiral several times, including his last day in the service when in his formal white uniform he gave a stirring commencement address at the Canadian Forces College Toronto before driving off for Nova Scotia. As always he made an impact.
His easy ability to speak, his musical skills, as well as his command and seaman skills meant that he was completely competent in professional as well as social settings. He served Canada wonderfully.

Allison and Family,
Very Saddening to learn of Hugh's passing. -
It was my privilege and honour to have known and worked with Hugh in the RCN and subsequently in retirement with the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust. He was a very able professional Naval Officer, much appreciated by his subordinates, admired by his contemporaries and observed by his seniors as exemplifying all the right qualities to excel at the highest levels. More than that, he was most of all a very fine human being who has left warm memories with all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Sue and I send our condolences - May he rest in peace

As an historian, it's always a great feeling (navally) of much satisfaction to see the son of at least historically a famous father, who himself and on his own skills, does extremely well, and in the same field. CDR R.A.S. MacNeil is still one of the better known competent wartime Skippers, and although Hugh has now 'departed this mortal coil,' and this, to we who only knew Hugh slightly, is a very sad event, he also has had the greatest of careers. BZ in grateful memory of his stellar contributions,
Fraser McKee

I took over from Hugh as Chair of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust looking after HMCS SACKVILLE in 2004. He had been Chair for 5 years and was delighted to turn it over. Ann and I almost bought Hugh and Alison’s house in Princes Lodge in 1970 so we have known each other for many years. A finer Gentleman you could never find. Smart capable and lover of the sea and the Navy. A superb Naval Officer who I not only admired but wanted to emulate. Lucky to have dined with his famous brother Robin MacNeil of the MacNeil Lehrer report aboard SACKVILLE. He was a superbly famous Naval officer and his contribution twice as Chair of CNMT was outstanding.
What memories and what sorrow to find him gone. To Alison and family we send our heartfelt condolences and sympathy at the loss of a great man
All our love and affection
