Dear Elizabeth, Brent, Suzanne, Leslie, Stephanie, and Natalie,
Sending our love and heartfelt condolences to you and all your families on the loss of your dear husband and father. Chook was an amazing man who was loved, respected and admired by everyone who knew him. Marian and I had the good fortune to meet and get to know Chook after we began coming to Sandy Cove in 2007. He was always so kind, thoughtful, joyful and welcoming to everyone. In the summer of 2021, my father, Julian, came to visit us in Sandy Cove. He and Chook had a lot in common with their similar hockey backgrounds and life experiences and they instantly became friends. Julian also extends his deepest sympathy to all of you. May you be comforted by your wonderful memories of Chook. We will all miss him very much.

As a youth, I grew up listening to Bob Huggins call the play by play of the Windsor Maple Leafs hockey games. He always gave Chook much praise as a hockey player. As a teenager,I was lucky to be able to play on the 57/58 team with Chook. I soon realized why he was given high praise. He was a great hockey player and also an honorable person. Also, he was a very good ball player. I regret that I am unable to attend his funeral.
My sympathy to Elizabeth and family. He will be sadly missed. Glenn Ross

Smith Family:
Your Dad as you very much know was an absolutely outstanding person. I was quite young when I first got involved in organized hockey in Windsor but will always remember Easter Sunday 1974 as a 14 year-old and desperately wanting to go to Truro to see a playoff game for the Nova Scotia Intermediate AAA Championship between Windsor and Truro. There was no room I was told until a phone call from your Dad at 10:30 that morning telling me to be ready in 20 minutes. He told me "I have 5 in my car now but we will find a place for you." He has been a hockey icon in Windsor and will be remembered for many years to come. God Bless -- Dan Boyd

To Elizabeth and the family I send my deepest condolences. Chook was a wonderful man. I always enjoyed bumping into the two of you and he would inevitably ask about Uncle Graham Cochrane (I gather they had some good times together). Chook was also a great hockey player and I'm glad I got to most of the home games of that great Windsor team of which he was Captain. May it help you to know that there are many people thinking of you and remembering him at this time.

I would appreciate taking a moment to have acknowledged my sincere thoughts concerning the passing of Chook, to his loved ones, friends, hockey fans and everyday citizens who knew from afar or near, please accept my most sincere condolences, he will be missed. Chook comes from the generation where us as youths admired his hockey skill & talent; however, we also looked forward to his approval and camaraderie as we moved forward in age, when those of us who had the good fortune of making professional ranks returned home (Windsor) in off season or for visits, it was Chook we would be with on main street or having coffee or a tea while of course discussing hockey or local affairs. He was not boisterous nor with a huge ego, he was Chook with his usual smile and often if someone was approaching, as he did one evening in Halifax, he would put his hand upon my shoulder while we walked and step in front of me asking can we help you! I knew I was home and safe. Yes, he will be missed.

Elizabeth & family,
Please accept my sincere sympathy in Chook’s passing. He lived a great life and as a child growing up, he was one of my heroes. I always went to the hockey games in Windsor and Halifax and a lot of times was in the broadcast booth with Bob H at the home games. I can still see him playing in my thoughts and remembering the magic moments of many games especially the three goals in the last minute of the Halifax W’s in the playoff games in Halifax. Always enjoyed our talks at the funeral home, church, Pothier’s or in public. “Rest In Peace Chook”
I am so sorry we won’t be there for the service, as we are in Newfoundland.
Once again our deepest sympathy!

Thank you Chook for the memories which are not entirely connected to the hockey arena. I have many memories of Chook blazing down the wing on his skates and unleashing a rising wrist shot into the top corner of the opposing net. My fondest recollections of Chook are however, non hockey related. They are of the individual I knew him to be. The individual who always had a welcoming handshake and delighted those who came in contact with him, warm and friendly conversation. To say Chook was a “people person” would be a gross understatement.
Chook was a legend, not in his eyes but in the eyes of others. He was a legend, not because of his skills on the ice but due to his composition as a human being.
Thank you Chook, you made the world a better place, what better gift could one leave personkind than that? RIP my friend and give “Buster” a big hug from me.

We are so sorry to hear of Chook’s passing. A couple years ago we were coming back from Digby Pines. We stopped at sandy cove to see the beach. As we were parking we saw Kevin and Leslie, they invited us to stop at the house on our way back. But said Chook was down at the beach by himself. We walked over to him, his smile was infectious. He couldn’t believe seeing us there. We stopped at the house and had a great visit. We will cherish that memory forever. The Smiths are always so welcoming.

Sad to hear of Chook's passing. He was such a fine and accomplished man. I loved watching him play hockey when I was young. When I got to know him better, later in my life, I came to appreciate what a wonderful family man he was. Spending time with the Smiths was, and is, wonderful.
What I appreciated most about Chook, however, was what a great friend he was to my dad, at a time when Dad was most in need of a friend. Thanks Chook. You will be greatly missed.
