Obituary of Mildred Kathleen Smiley

Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mildred Kathleen (Rich) Smiley, age 92, on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Windsor Elms Village.

Born April 17, 1931, in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Hale and Margaret (Crabbe) Rich. Mildred is survived by her loving sons, Tim and Chris (Mary) Smiley; granddaughter, Haley (Chris) Rushton; great granddaughters, Alice and Beatrix Millie Rushton.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Eric Smiley; son, Michael Smiley; brother, George Rich; and sisters, Gladys Greenhalgh and Irene Soulis.

Millie was a happy and positive soul, passionate about caregiving. Trained as an RN in Windsor she ventured to Regina, Saskatchewan for two years before returning to Windsor where she pursued her career, and later volunteered for the Cancer Society and various church groups. As a breast cancer survivor herself, she became a Dragon boat team paddler and participated into her 80’s. Her passion for music lasted to her final hours. Millie, a longtime member, sang for the choir at the Windsor Baptist Church. Her friends and family can attest to her competitive spirit when it came to playing cards and board games; one needed to keep an eye on her!

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Carrie Dauphinee at the REAL Residence and the staff of the Windsor Elms for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home (DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service), 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20 in Windsor Baptist Church, 219 Payzant Dr., Windsor, Rev. Rob Heffernan officiating. Interment will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. Donations in memory of Millie may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
