Q: How would you describe Guy to someone who had never met them?
A: Mr Payne was the type of teacher who made you believe in yourself and challenged you to become a better student, person and athlete. I attended KES for grades 7-12 and Guy had such an influence over my development during those years.
To the entire Payne family, you were blessed to have had him in your lives, just as we all were.

My memories of my Brother will live on. Special when he went to Bishops Collage. He use to set me up these guys who were real lemons to say the least. He also kept a brotherly watchful eye on me. I will miss his music taste I cannot forget him playing the songs over and over again especially Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino. The saving grace is he is now in a place where he is free to roam without any pain...

Dear Betsy, Jason, Missy, Meg and Jill,
Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that Deb and I feel for you all for the passing of your husband and father. Guy was a remarkable person who touched the lives of so many students and athletes. I will always remember how both of you took us, young teachers, under your wing and invited us countless times at your place for dinner.
Under his tutelage as a track coach for 10 years, I learned a lot about coaching. In addition to his tough physical training, Guy was a firm believer that sport psychology was essential to an athlete's performance but also to their long term development. Not only did he teach his athletes the proper skills, he taught them to be better persons.
The 400x400m relay at Beazley field (in early 1980?) where our senior boys’ team broke the provincial record and the large smile on Guy’s face will stay in my mind for ever.
Those are the little things that we remember—smiles, laughter—and although it is hard right now, the memories of these deeds will make Guy live again in our hearts.

Dear Betsy and family, sending our deepest condolences. Guy was a fixture here on College Road for so many years and it would be safe to say he will forever hold the record as to the number of trips walking back n forth to the college on the hill from his home! College Road has lost a long time legend. Take care as always.

I have just finished perusing all of the posted messages to this point. The common thread is that Guy was a kind, gentle man who used those traits to mentor, teach, coach and be a friend to thousands. I have many fond memories of my personal and coaching interactions with Guy. He was a man who I always enjoyed running into on the sport fields at Kings and around the province. For a hundred years, Guy Payne was KCS and KES.
To Betsy, Meg, Missy, Jason and Jill, my sincere condolences. I am sure you will reflect often on many memorable recollections.

My sincere condolences, to the family, on the passing of Mr.Payne. I had the pleasure of being a student of his and as a member of the track team whilst I attended KES from 1985-1988. I will never forget the time he made me stick my gum on my nose in Economics class since , of course, I was not supposed to have gum in class. I know he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many. May he rest in peace

So saddened to hear this news . Mr.Payne was a mentor who taught me so many lessons outside the classroom. He always had a word of fatherly advice to you teenage boarding student when needed. He always inspired me to give my best as a soccer, hockey and track coach. Every time I returned to the school as an adult he would immediately call me by first name and be generally interested in my accomplishments. He was truly a great man who had a major impact on my life helping me achieve goals by lessons learned long after I left KES

My warmest thoughts go out to you Betsy. You two did an amazing job raising your children. I think at sometime most of your children fell asleep on my lap on our Track & Field trips across the province. I learned so much from this great man. Guy spent so many days in the pouring rain or snow in an effort to convince me the other competitors would not be practicing in this weather and thus I would persevere because of our extra work. It often worked .You will be missed Guy Payne.

During my five years at KCS/KES, Mr. Payne was a kind and benevolent presence. For many of us who ventured away from home at an early age, his kindness and support were most welcome. His quiet words of wisdom and encouragement to me personally, and collectively to the student body, were appreciated and remained with us throughout our lives.
Condolences to Mrs. Payne and family as you reflect with gratitude on a full life well lived.
