Obituary of Doris Elizabeth Fraser

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Age 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9,2023 in Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. She was born on July 24, 1926 in Truro to the late William and Ella M. (Bissett) Gunn.

Doris grew up in Hantsport where she married Bob and they brought up their family. Mom loved working with numbers and worked at the Bank of Commerce as a teller on and off over the years. At one time she owned a small dry goods store on Main Street. During their time in Hantsport her and Bob were members of the local United Church, where mom, fittingly, enjoyed her role as treasurer of the UCW. Mom liked to sew and was an avid knitter. The click of knitting needles was a familiar sound. We all benefited from her sweaters and socks, mittens and afghans. She enjoyed trying new recipes and some of her favorites are still being enjoyed. She was a multitalented lady who knew how to stretch a dollar. When the family was young they bought an old fishing camp. With no electricity or modern plumbing it made for some very interesting and great memories. They had a big change in life in 1976 when they bought The Wildwood Motel in Shelburne where they were before they retired in 1984. The next years were spent in Mt. Uniacke until 1998 when they downsized to their condo in Bedford. Mom loved the sun and her frugal ways made it possible for her and Dad to enjoy many winters south after their retirement, whether it was on one of the southern islands or at a condo in Florida. To most Mom was a quiet reserved lady but she did not shy away from an adventure. She topped it all off by parasailing above the waters of the Domincan Republic when she was 87! It was certainly a life well lived!!

Doris is survived by her children; sons, Bob (Marilyn), Bedford and Peter, Halifax; daughters, Terry (Brian) Smith, Bible Hill and Patty Fraser, Wolfville; grandchildren, Stacey (Garry), Julie (Shaun) Fretter, Matt (Monica), Kenzie, Alec, Sidney and Livy; great-grandchildren, Finn and Chase; sister-in-law, Shirley (Ed) Sanford, Coldbrook and many nieces and nephews.
