Please accept our heartfelt condolences. I met Bruce when I was the minister in Walton. He and his family welcomed me with open arms. When my house was damaged in a fire, Bruce didn’t bat an eye and welcome me into their home until mine was cleaned. He introduced me to the father of my children, Jennifer and Alex. Bruce had a heart of cold and was wise in ways that are hard to explain. He held a deep love for his family and his community.
May his memory be a blessing.

Our camping trip through the States was a dream of Bruce's but for me it was like a honeymoon. We laughed, and loved, and talked of memories of other camping trips.
As much as we enjoyed our travels of other trips in the past, (Florida, Hawaii, B.C., Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, Newfoundland, and many other United States) this was our Great Escape!
Of course Covid made us come home early, but that was fortuitous because it got us settled in a new community before Bruce got sick.

I don’t have a specific story about uncle Bruce…just that he was always there. To listen, to watch tv with, to ride in the car with, to teach me stuff, to take me on errands with him…to be a big teddy bear. He introduced me to Archie comic books and then forever after I had my nose in one of them whenever I was there. He also introduced me to 2 of my other favorite authors, Clive Cussler and Dick Holt, and we would exchange books over time.
He would frequently take me to work with him when I was there. And he always picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, no matter what time it was.
He always made me feel like I belonged there. Not like I was a visitor.
The last time I visited at Christmas I remember he took me with him down the valley to get a present for Aunt Debby because he knew they I loved going to Kentville and there was a cool healthfood store and a bookstore that he wanted to show me.
He got to see my new house when they were on their cross-country trip right before the world shut down and he helped with our back deck, so a part of him will always be here.
Also, he always called me Lilybett ❤️
There were so many things that I loved and appreciated about him. He will be greatly missed.

My name is Beth and Bruce was my Uncle. But he was more like a second dad, and he always called me Lilybet. I spend a lot of my summers at their house in Centre Burlington and always felt like it was a second home with him and Aunt Debby.

After I received Bruce’s call last summer, he was often in my thoughts. I guess he was touching base with the Burlington “ old gang” while he could. It was such a nice surprise to talk after so many years.
My first recollection of meeting Bruce was way back when we were in our pre-primary school years. His mum came to a W.I. meeting at our house and Bruce came too. He was a bit mischievous back then and while crawling behind our Christmas tree, he knocked it over! Got a bit of scolding from Lois for that behavior!
Memories of activities in the local youth group, lots of softball games, church suppers, dances, weenie roasts and corn boils come to mind.
Others have mentioned his patience in their condolence messages. Bruce taught me how to drive with his own car….now that took bravery and patience! His great training certainly came in handy when my jobs involved driving throughout the Atlantic Provinces.
Back then, I considered Bruce my best friend. Bruce was happy living in Hants Co., marrying Debby and starting their family. Our lives got busy and sorry to say, we didn’t keep in touch.
When we spoke last summer, he told me how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. Each one is different and he enjoyed spending time with each of them.
My condolences to the family.

My dad has been the single most significant influence in my life. Bruce Shaw taught me that every problem was an opportunity to learn something new. Growing up in the house he built - was an enchanted country experience. When I wanted to raise chickens, he made me a chicken coop. When I tried to catch frogs, he dug me a pond. Not only was he generous, he possessed patience I've rarely witnessed -explaining every step of everything he tackled to my curious young mind. He was my quiet teacher. Together we would stack wood in preparation for a cold Maritime winter, and through that, I learned the value of hard work. That ability to roll my sleeves up and "get it done" stuck with me long after I moved away from Nova Scotia.
My dad prepared me for life. When I graduated high school, he gifted me a screwdriver and told me that this would help me solve all my problems. He was half right. For the rest, I relied on his outlook.
I recall my childhood with him fondly. And I've missed him dearly in the years I've been gone from Nova Scotia. We kept in touch less than I would have liked, but I have taken so much of him with me, and I've passed it all on to my children.
Even when his body was failing him, he used his one good finger to email me. That was my dad.
The strength and optimism I have held in battling my own illness come from him. My love of entrepreneurship and analytical mind comes from listening to him describe his day at the dinner table. I knew I wanted to be someone who grew up to build things. I grew up believing I was not limited by my gender, age, or beginnings in the foster care system. I became all I am because he believed in me.
No words could express my gratitude for being raised by quite possibly the best father on earth. Thank-you Dad. You will never be forgotten.
Love you,
Rachel

In the summer of 2007, my family and I moved into our first house, a small white house on Wiley Avenue in Windsor, Nova Scotia. We were moving into a new town in a relatively unfamiliar province so I could start a new job. It was an intimidating experience to say the least.
As we were moving in, our immediate neighbours promptly walked over, introduced themselves, and warmly welcomed us to the neighbourhood. Thus began our friendship with Bruce and Debby. They are, by far, the best neighbours we’ve ever had.
The backyards on our side of Wiley Avenue had no fences. For some, this would be a reason to either buy a different house or put up a fence, but we quickly became thankful for this unique arrangement. It meant that we could easily pop over to see them and that they could do the same. It meant that our young daughters could run into their yard and that their granddaughter Ella could run into ours.
This also meant that I could ask Bruce all sorts of questions about how to fix this or that in our house, or that I could pop over to borrow an obscure tool from his incredible workshop/barn/garage/laboratory. Bruce had a quiet, gentle, unobtrusive, and stabilizing manner that we appreciated. He radiated warmth. When I think of Bruce, I will always imagine him smoking his pipe while he did everything, whether mowing the lawn, fixing his truck or camper, working on the house, or just sitting on his beautiful back patio. I will always imagine the magically sweet smell of his tobacco, his incense.
Our lives in Windsor were made better by living beside Bruce and Debby, and we miss them. Our thoughts and condolences are with you, Debby, and your entire family.

Debby, Kelly, Adam and Rachel and family,
You already know Bruce was always a special and important member of our crew. The years we all worked together were challenging for sure (actually there was one 'situation' that occurred within a week of Bruce coming aboard that defies description and was a real trial by fire... NOT caused by any of our Crew BTW!).
Right from that start, Bruce was always up to his elbows with the rest of us in working out solutions.
We were growing so fast in a sea populated with giants.
It took a lot to make sure we were always one step ahead and on top of things. Bruce led the charge with his knowledge and extensive experience.
Challenging times but also great times!
Bruce was a true friend. A man of integrity, kindness and intelligence.
His loss is being felt across our Oulton's Crew.
He will be missed but remembered.
Remembered with a smile and a Thank you.
- Tammy and Jon
