Obituary of Elinor Sadie Malcolm

Please share a memory of Elinor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sorrow and bittersweet gratitude that the Malcolm family would like to announce the passing of our kind, brave, caring, and generous mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, at the age of 93. Elinor Sadie Malcolm of Poplar Grove, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with her family by her side. She was born February 25, 1930, to the late Robert and Mary (Sanford) Hanes. Elinor lived her entire life in Poplar Grove. Her childhood was fondly spent with her five siblings and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends nearby.

After graduating from Windsor Academy, Elinor completed a degree in bookkeeping and met her husband and partner in life, Thomas “Tom” Malcolm. They spent 47 beautiful years together and were role models for their children and grandchildren. Family was Elinor’s first love. A full-time homemaker to her three children, Elinor took an active role in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: baking beautiful wedding and birthday cakes, knitting, quilting, or mending anything asked of her; sharing her love of gardening, crafting, and birdwatching; acting as advice-giver and voice of reason; and ensuring there was always something freshly baked in her kitchen.

Elinor was also passionate about her community. She was a 4-H leader for many years, an active member of Newport Jolly Seniors and the Windsor Friday morning bowling league, a devoted church member, and an avid volunteer. She was honoured with Lifetime Membership awards to both the Avondale United Church Women and the Three Cornered Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia.

She is survived by her children, Wanda (Richard) Manning, Marlene (Peter) Stuckey, and Bill (Vicki) Malcolm; grandchildren, Melanie (Doug) Jackson, Amanda (Jeremy) Brown, Nick Stuckey, Kim (Mark) Haulena, Alex (Erin) Malcolm, and Kaitlyn (Morgan) Edgecombe; great-grandchildren, Keagan, Ewan, Hadden, Beckett, Maddox, and Lola; siblings, Helen and David; as well as special grand-niece, Megan Pierce.

Besides her parents, Elinor was predeceased by husband, Tom, and siblings, Victoria, Georgina, and Owen.

A sincere thank you to the compassionate healthcare professionals involved in Mum’s journey. We especially want to thank the VON, Northwood Home Care and the Unit 200 nursing staff of Hants Community Hospital.
