Obituary of Lillian Beatrice Hergett

Please share a memory of Lillian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

We sadly share with you that Lillian Beatrice (Boyd) Hergett peacefully passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, May 22, 2026 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, she was 98. Lil was the second child born to the late Burton L and Grace Ellen (King) Boyd in Mapleton (Three Mile Plains) on April 13, 1928. She grew up in their family home with her siblings, Amy, Eric, Gordon, Harold, Christina “Susie”, Patsy Jean, Blair and Marg.

Lillian married Ken Hergett of Curry’s Corner in May 1947. In 1948, they bought the McNeil farm on Dill Road. They had a daughter Marylin Jean. Living on the farm was a new experience for her and it was difficult one at times for her in the beginning. However, she loved the farmer and was determined to become a good farm wife and she did. She cooked good meals and loved to bake. Their house was always full of good food. Her housekeeping skills were to be envied and she learned to make bread and did lots of pickling and canning with the farm produce. She even taught herself how to sew and joined the local women’s institute group. Eventually she became comfortable helping Ken with some farm work.

After many years working on the farm, Ken retired due to ill health and they sold the farm and built a home just down the hill. This gave them time to enjoy their neighbours and friends and to become more involved in their community. They both loved to dance and so they joined a community dance club with old friends and met new friends. They spent many happy hours there.

In 1989, Ken passed away at the age of 69 after open heart surgery. This was a very difficult time for Lil. After a couple of years, she sold their home and moved to an apartment at the Gladys Manning Retirement Community on College Road. It was a great move for her as she reconnected with old friends and made new friends. Once again, she was cooking and baking and organizing social events with her friends. She was a “card shark” who thrived on the many card games she enjoyed over the years. Lil lived there for 27 and a half years. After some ill health issues and a hospital stay she moved to Dykeland Lodge in June 2022.

Moving to Dykeland Lodge was an adjustment after living on her own for the past 33 years but she made the move work and was content and happy there. She was fond of her caregivers and nurses and they enjoyed a mutual sharing of respect and kindness. Special thanks to Jessica, Tonya, Judy, Shelby and Laura for your wonderful care of Lil.

Lil had an interest in people and life until her death. She read her paper from cover to cover daily, loved doing the lexicon and always had a murder mystery book on the go until almost the end of her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Marylin Jean, Halifax; brother, Blair Boyd, his wife Karen and their sons, Jeff, Andrew and Jason; sister, Marg, her husband, Lou Nowlan and their sons, David and Daryell. Lil is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Nina Boyd, Middleton; Eileen Boyd, Saint John, NB and Mattie Boyd, Bedford.

Besides her parents, Lillian was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Amy Lockhart, Eric Boyd, Gordon Boyd, Harold Boyd, Christina “Susie” Greenough and Patsy Jean Lunn.

We want to thank her doctors: Dr. Amer Ahmad, Dr. Iona Wile and Dr. Cathryn Smith. Lil’s family is especially grateful for the extra time and medical attention provided by Cathryn as her health deteriorated.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to her niece, Carolyn Armstrong and her husband, Bill. Carolyn was her sweetheart and they shared many happy times. Carolyn and Bill’s caring help and support made a difference in Lil’s life and they are deeply appreciated. Thank you to Jean Frank for her constant caring, support and attention to Lil’s well-being and her happiness.
