Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ethel Louise “Eddie” Smith of Chester, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026 at the age of 92 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born May 12, 1934 in Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Charles Richard “Dick” Sweet and Margaret J. (Brown) Sweet of Curry’s Corner. She was wife to Sid and mom to Richard for 71 years.

Ethel grew up on a farm in Curry’s Corner, was a graduate of Edgehill School for Girls and went on to Graduate from Kay Anslow Business Academy. She worked for over 35 years with the Town of Windsor in the town office ending her career as Deputy Town Clerk.

Mom and dad lived in Windsor for many years until moving to Chester Basin in 1985, where they built a wonderful home near the water. Here they enjoyed many walks and enjoyed chatting with friends along the way. In 2021, they moved to Chester for a more maintenance free lifestyle.

Mom loved animals, especially cats and dogs, and always had a treat ready for them when they met. Her special pets were our cat Suzy and dog, Didi.

In her early days, mom enjoyed sports like field hockey at Edgehill, badminton and bowling. Mom and Dad enjoyed many good times on their boats over the years at the Lahave River Yacht Club and in the Mahone Bay area. They also enjoyed their many travels around the Maritimes and to Maine and New Hampshire.

Mom was always concerned about the well being of her family and always made sure we were well fed and cared for. She enjoyed spoiling her son and granddaughter Alicia with much love and affection.

Ethel is survived by her husband, Harris Sidney “Sid” Smith of Chester and son, Richard of Windsor; as well as granddaughter, Alicia (Gordon) of Sweets Corner; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Robert Bearne of Bridgewater.

Our family would like to recognize the love and support of special friends Sue and Tod Hennigar, David and Patsy Shnare as well as David and Cynthia Wentzell and the many other friends who touched her life over the years. Special thanks to Lynn Key and all the staff at Cove 3 special care home for caring for Mom during her final year battling dementia, falls and declining health.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert Street, Windsor (902-798-8317). A private graveside service will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in memory of Ethel be made to a charity of one’s choice.
