Obituary of Ervin Henry Smeltzer
Age 94, of Upper Vaughan, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, six weeks shy of his 95 birthday, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Dad peacefully left this world holding his daughters’ hands, surrounded by the love they shared for him.
Ervin is survived by his eldest daughter, Myrna (Andrew) Hardwick; grandchildren, Krista (Jarrett) MacDonald, Katelyn (Tim) Halbgewachs; great-grandchildren Ayla, Brylee, Brooklyn and Kaycee. He also leaves behind his youngest daughter, Rodena (André) Mignault; grandchildren, Jessica Mignault (Conner) and Alex Mignault (Kylie). Amongst his most cherished companions and friends, he leaves behind his sister-in-law, “Aunt Valerie” Gollan and brother-in-law, “Uncle Bob” Shannon.
He was predeceased by his beautiful wife and loving soulmate, Rosamond “Rossie”, in 2014. Together for over 58 years, the two of them built a life and family grounded in companionship, loyalty and laughter. Dad was the final member of his generation and we know they are eagerly awaiting his arrival with open arms. Ervin was also predeceased by his son, Doug (2008).
We would like to thank the Macleod House in Windsor for making our dad’s last six years memorable and giving our family a place of refuge to spend time with him. Despite being the reigning champion of Tuesday night bingo, dad built lasting friendships with every resident and on occasion could be convinced to share his chocolate bars with anyone who stopped by. We could not have navigated these difficult times without the diligent care and unwavering support from the staff and caregivers at Hants Community Hospital, CBI Home Health and VON. Each member of the family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Dr. Williams and Dr. Smith for their patience and compassion.
We will forever miss his laughter, quick wit, cheeky grins and happiness he brought to the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.
