Obituary of Barry Campbell Cohoon
It is with great sadness that on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at age 68, Barry Cohoon passed away at home. Born May 8, 1957, in Truro, he was a son of the late Donald and Olive (Campbell) Cohoon and husband to Danita (Shay) Cohoon.
Barry spent most of his life on some form of heavy machinery, having worked for Dexter Construction Company for 30 plus years. He loved anything with tires or tracks and was happiest when he was behind the controls of whatever he was operating. Barry often "put equipment through its paces" and loved being able to push heavy machinery to its technical limits. The results of this demonstrated his mastery of use; being ruthlessly efficient and doing the work with finesse. No matter the job, Barry's skill in operating heavy equipment was second to none. To him, his passion was his profession. Barry's work ethic and workmanship made him highly sought-after, particularly as a finishing grade excavator operator. When he wasn't working for Dexter's, he was out on an excavator in Alberta or, for a few years, was a long-haul truck driver across Canada and the United States.
Despite the many health issues that plagued Barry throughout his life, he was constantly on the go and had a sweet tooth a mile wide. He was known for being kind, having a good sense of humour and being down-to-earth. Barry loved working outdoors and throughout his work life, was able to work in remote locations that offered majestic views, like the Rockies. Be it junking up wood to puttering around with various heavy equipment throughout his life, Barry was rarely ever bored.
Barry will be remembered by his loving wife, Danita; son, Alan and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; brother, John and the many, many people that Barry developed friendships with over the years of his work and travels.
