Obituary of Rev. Dr. John William Bartol

Please share a memory of Rev. Dr. John William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With much sadness, we announce the passing of Rev. Dr. John William Bartol, at the age of 95, on Monday, January 12, 2026. He was born to the late William and Minnie (Armstrong) Bartol in Sydney Mines.

John graduated from Sydney Mines High School, then earned a BA degree at Acadia University with Carol, who had already stolen his heart. They married while he was completing his Masters of Divinity degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA, in 1955. He was granted an honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Acadia University in 1990.

John put his faith in Christ as a teenager and felt called to the ministry a year after graduating from high school. He served with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada (CBAC) for the next 70 years with Carol, pastoring in nine communities and cities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He was well known for his impactful preaching of God’s Word and his extraordinary ability to connect with and pastor, those he served. He loved building relationships with people through weddings, funerals and baptisms. He served on various boards for the CBAC as well as Acadia University, Acadia Divinity College and Crandall University.

Upon retiring from full time ministry, John continued to serve as interim pastor in the Valley region. He was always willing to speak at other churches and events in the region. He was celebrated by the CBAC for 70 years of ordained ministry this past summer. John preached his final message just one month before his death.

John loved to write and share spiritual insights and wisdom he gleaned in his daily walk and studies. This is evidenced in the publishing of four books and countless articles for Maritime newspapers and publications. He mentored and taught numerous student and younger pastors and was sought after as a peacemaker, leading churches in conflict resolution.

He leaves behind his four children, David (Florence), Stephen (Judy), Cathy Wilkes (Mark) and Carolyn; nine wonderful grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He took great pride in each one and continually extolled their virtues. He will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and countless individuals influenced through his ministry.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his loving wife, Carol Louise (Smith) Bartol; sister, Joyce Currey and many in-laws.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., on Friday, January 16.
