Obituary of Douglas Alden Spencer

Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with broken, heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Douglas Alden Spencer, age 88, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2025.  He was born on February 2, 1937 and was raised in Wolfville. Doug, better known as “Sonny”, was the epitome of hard work, dedication and steadfast love.  His work ethic was next to none, to the end.

As a skilled finish carpenter, Sonny spent over 55 years building homes/structures that provided comfort and security to countless families – especially his own. He took immense pride in this craft and was a mentor to many who followed in his footsteps. Beyond his work, Sonny was a devoted, unwavering father to his two daughters, Patricia (Nick) Bailey and Sherry (David) Logan and a very proud grandfather of Jon and Greg Sutherland, Ryan and Natasha Thornhill; as well as his great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Destiny and Layla.

Sonny loved hunting, being involved with the Wolfville Fire Department in the late 60s and 70s, as well as being a member of both the Wolfville and Windsor Lions Clubs over the years, which was ever so important to him. Through these interests, he had collected a never-ending list of friends with whom he maintained relationships right up to the point of his passing. Special mention of just a few of those who were so close to our father during his life include Herbert Morine, Benjamin Barkhouse, Ernest Atwell and his devoted companion the past seven years, Jessie Moore. He was so fond of all of you! He adored his dog, Marley, who remained at his side for the past 10 years. No doubt, dad, you are in heaven with a hammer in your hand, Marley at your side, now at peace.

Sonny was predeceased by his mother and father, Laura Mae (Berry) and Vernon Osborne Spencer; brothers, Clarence, Basil and James; sisters, Laura MacCharles and Dorothy Hunt.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). At Sonny’s request, there will be no funeral or celebration of life. Interment will be held in Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory of Sonny may be made to any local SPCA. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting: www.demontfamilyfuneralhome.ca.

A special note for father: “One of the greatest gifts ever received came from God.  I call him Daddy.”  ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
