Dean Brunet

Obituary of Dean Yvon Joseph Brunet

Please share a memory of Dean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

We, the family, are saddened to announce the passing of Dean Brunet, age 64, of Ashdale, on Monday, September 29, 2025, at home, following illness.

Born in Halifax, on August 24, 1961, Dean followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a long-serving member of the Royal Canadian Navy from 1981 to 2002, retiring at the rank of Petty Officer, 1st Class. Over those 21 years, he sailed as a Marine Engineering Technician aboard the HMCS Iroquois, HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Algonquin and HMCS St. John’s. His naval career gave him the opportunity to travel the world and experience distant shores.

At home, Dean was more devoted to land-based vehicles. He retired to the quiet countryside of West Hants, where he followed his true passion of working on and fixing cars for himself, family and friends. If he was not rebuilding his Oldsmobile 442 or his VW Westfalia van, he was resurrecting some other vehicle out of the ashes.  “Mr. Fix It” is an understatement for his mechanical prowess as he turned jerry-rigging into an art form. While his carpentry skills may have been questionable, if it had a motor he could bring it back to life.

A proud father and grandfather, Dean is survived by his sons, Dean Jr. and Chad Brunet and Ryan Kirby (Heidi); grandchildren, Nolan and Evan Kirby; father, Yvon and sister, Linda Brunet Hervias and family. He is also survived by his special friend, Cyndi, who also assisted with his care in recent months as his illness progressed.

Dean was predeceased by his mother, Lillian (Long); as well as, stepmother, Faye (Redden).

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors to celebrate and remember Dean on Friday, October 17 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre.
