I was suddenly shocked and saddened to hear the passing of an old friend who I had met the very first day of junior high band in 1982 one “Vince Howell”. Even though we had lost touch well over 25 years ago……. I recall vividly meeting him on that first day of in Band class. Our band teacher Brian Johnson, said to “sort yourselves out on what instruments you are planning on playing” . And standing there , was Vincent, myself, and Alligator Al ( Alan Levy) …..the Great percussionist trio of grade seven. Vincent’s quirky sense of humour , enthusiasm, and kindness I will always remember.
Being a hick growing up in Mount Denson, Nova Scotia, I will just say I grew up in a family of modest means.. Vincent (without me asking) would have his father’s secretary photocopy the latest and “Tastiest” drum articles and complicated rudiments,, (which was a big deal back in 1982 when Photocopiers were rare and not Cheap to use by today’s standards)
Thanks to his kindness. I was able to learn and have all the same tools and set up well in my drumming progression. While In summer band camp at Acadia, we would laugh at our own Shenanigans and get into silly situations while enjoying life in those early years.
To Valerie. Elaine, and the Family and friends of Vincent, I am sorry for your loss and share in your sadness of his passing. To Vincent your friendship, kindness and Antics from those many years ago still bring a smile to my face. May you have “ Fair-winds and following seas” on your final journey. Dan Mason
