Obituary of Douglas Maurice Ormon

Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Maurice “Doug” Ormon, of Windsor, Hants Co., who left us on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Windsor on September 13, 1956, Doug was the son of the late John “Jack” and Joyce (Harnish) Ormon previously of Woodville, Hants County.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret “Margie”; daughters, Sarah Ormon (Stephane McAlear) and Katie Ormon (Matthew Chambers), all of Windsor; and a nephew he loved like a son, Fraser Cochrane, Bear River. Doug’s greatest joy was his grandchildren, Scarlett Chambers, Levi McAlear, Aleena Chambers and Audrey McAlear - who lovingly knew him as “Odad”, his most cherished title. He also leaves behind his siblings, Edward (Wanda), Glen Haven; Wayne, Falmouth; David, Scotch Village; Laura (James) Blanchard, Falmouth; Darrell (Cindy), Falmouth; Shirley (Jamie Dykens), Three Mile Plains and Heather (Gerald) Barker, Falmouth.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Joseph (Cecile), previously of Newport Corner and Margo Rogers, previously of Kentville.

Doug was a devoted husband to Margie for over 46 years. Their marriage was full of personality - honest, loud and rooted in love. They built a life filled with loyalty, laughter and a deep connection where nothing was left unsaid. Doug’s pride in his daughters, Sarah and Katie, was unwavering. He worked hard to support them in all their pursuits and while his job sometimes kept him from the sidelines or recital halls, his pride was never in question. His family was always at the centre of his life. In the early days, that might have meant heading out with his brothers to see about some cattle, but in later years it meant being “Odad” in all the best ways - roughhousing, handing out treats and showing up for every fun moment. He opened his home to family and friends with warmth and generosity and taking care of Margie, his children and especially his grandchildren, was always his greatest priority.

Doug was a carpenter by trade and a craftsman in every sense of the word. A proud member of the Carpenters Union Local 83 for over 45 years, he worked for himself and many organizations over the years. His work quite literally shaped the landscape of Nova Scotia and more notably, Hants County. You can't drive far without passing something he had a hand in building. On a job site, you knew who was in charge and if you didn’t, you’d soon find out.

But Doug’s pride, purpose and passion didn’t stop at the job site. A country boy at heart, he was a founding member of the Classic Heritage Beef Show, a venture that brought him great joy alongside his longtime friend, Gary Dill. Despite a town address, Doug’s heart remained on the farm. He could often be found on his front porch, sipping tea (or something stronger), watching videos, reading or diving into passionate conversations about beef cattle.

Doug welcomed everyone, friend or stranger, with a seat at his table and a plate of food. Loud in all the best ways, he had a special name for just about everyone (whether they liked it or not) and if you ever met him, chances are you’ve got a story to tell. He had a superstitious streak (don’t mess with his elephant figurines or try playing cards on a Sunday), a strong set of opinions and a vocabulary as colourful as the man himself.

He wasn’t the most tactful, certainly not the greatest dancer, couldn’t carry a tune and never quite got the names right - but he was so uniquely, unapologetically Doug. He taught us that strength and independence come from hard work. That there are no shortcuts. That how you treat people matters. Doug could see people for who they truly were and he met everyone from every walk of life with the same reverence and heart.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). By request, there will be no visitation. A time to reminisce and share stories with family and friends will be held between 2 and 4 p.m., Saturday, September 13 in the Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, 35 Empire Lane, Windsor. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to 4-H Nova Scotia, 7 Atlantic Central Drive, East Mountain, NS B6L 2Z2 or a charity of one’s choice. We’ll miss his sayings - many of which can’t be printed - but we’ll always remember his favourite parting words:

“Stay out of the hot sun.”
