Obituary of Martin Gregory McNeil

Please share a memory of Martin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Age 72, died peacefully at home in Falmouth, on August 25, 2025, with his family by his side. Born April 14, 1953, he was the eldest child of the late Hector S. and Mary ‘Eileen’ (Gallivan) McNeil of Glace Bay, who raised him with unconditional faith, love and support.  Martin lived a life marked by dedication to family, career, and personal passions.  He was deeply loved and supported by his family and cherished by many friends.

Martin graduated with an MBA from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, in 1977, where he developed a strong interest in politics. His career led him to be appointed within the Government of Nova Scotia as the Executive Assistant to the Minister of Management Board, Government Services, Environment, Tourism and Culture, and Intergovernmental Affairs. He then accepted a position as the Executive Assistant to the President and Vice Chancellor of Acadia University. In 2002, he joined AstraZeneca as the External Relations Manager for Atlantic Canada, a role from which he retired in 2023.

Martin exemplified a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. He was frequently found engrossed in books on a wide range of subjects. His passion for sharing knowledge was evident, as he often engaged in lively discussions. When he wasn't speaking, he was captivating the room with his singing and guitar playing.

Martin had a wide range of interests, with a particular fondness for fly fishing, bird hunting, and golf. These activities took him to beautiful places and allowed him the opportunity to develop life-long friendships. In July, he enjoyed a memorable five-day trip in Newfoundland with some of his longtime fishing partners. He was deeply grateful for this trip, knowing it would be his last time on the water watching the salmon jump. A special thank you to all his friends who accompanied him on these cherished adventures.

Martin was a devoted father who loved, above all else, spending time with his daughter, Emma. He never missed a basketball game, dance recital, or an opportunity to take her traveling.  When he was diagnosed with cancer 18 years ago, he prayed for recovery so he could witness her high school graduation. Martin did beat cancer and not only had the joy of seeing Emma graduate from high school but also university. She was his pride and joy.

Martin will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend, Linda, and his cherished daughter, Emma. He leaves behind a close-knit family, including his beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, Colleen and Bill Long, and Joan and Ted Delehanty; his brother, Allan; nieces and nephews, Laura, Martin, Liam, and Kate.  Martin was also treasured by his father and mother-in-law, Victor and Sylvia Bobbitt, and his sisters-in-law, Judi Bobbitt and Ginny Sanford. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A private service will be held at a later date.  Donations in Martin’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, 112-2719 Gladstone St., Halifax, NS B3K 4W6.
