Obituary of Irene Marjorie Dugie

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Irene, Age 90, of Scotch Village, passed away peacefully at home, in the early hours of Friday, August 8, 2025. Born in Scotch Village on May 25, 1935 she was a daughter of the late Charles and Marjorie (MacHarrie) Rhodes.

Irene taught school for many years at Brooklyn Elementary School, until her retirement. She loved her work and was very dedicated to her students. She enjoyed music as her late husband played the guitar. Irene enjoyed reading the paper and doing the puzzles, walking in the park with her friends, Cathy and Brittney and long talks on the phone with her good friend, Judy and childhood friend, Bette. In later years, she liked watching the cows and horses in the pasture which she could see from her window. She loved cats and dogs although she only ever owned cats. Irene was also an avid church goer until her health deteriorated and didn’t any longer allow her to attend. She was always available for friends and family to drop by and chat. In her last year, as she deteriorated due to dementia, she was kept comfortable thanks to our good family friends, Lynn and Lillian.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Teresa (Serge Clement); son, Arthur and grandson, Cody Hebb; as well as other extended family members.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, William “Bill”; sisters, Stella Smith, Phyllis Judge, Flora McCulloch and Georgia Rhodes; brothers, James, Carl and Alton Rhodes; half-sisters, Vera Cheney, Thelma Amedee and Charlotte Rhodes; half-brother, Cecil Rhodes.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A public graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, August 16 in the Scotch Village Community Cemetery, Scotch Village Station Rd., Rev. Brenda McKay officiating. Please bring along a chair and umbrella if needed. Donations in memory of Irene may be made to Avondale United Church, PO Box 9, Brooklyn, NS B0N 2A0; Scotch Village Community Cemetery, C/O Ruth Paige, 702 Hwy 236, Stanley, NS B0N 2A0 or a charity of one’s choice.
