It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Sir Graham Day. He was an incredible man, full of wisdom and light. As a student, I have learned so much from his lectures and talks, and from the way he lived with generosity, integrity, and care for others, always supporting students and their growth. His guidance and example have inspired me and countless other students to grow, lead, and make a positive difference in our communities. My thoughts are with his family and all whose lives he touched.

I first met Sir Graham in the 70’s when he was Chairman of Cammel Laird Birkenhead. I was a chauffeur for John Gardiner who was Chief Executive of The Laird Group. Sir Graham joined the board of Laird and for many years was a great supporter of Laird. I remember his Chauffeur at Cammel Laird his name was Jimmy Mack he was quite a character and he had the utmost respect for Sir Graham. I also remember the Chauffeur he had at Powergen, a certain Geoff Stenbings. John Gardiner was a non executive director at Powergen also giving his full support to Sir Graham. Him and his wife Ann were truly lovely people and he treated me as he did to anyone regardless of their status. Rest in peace Sir Graham.

Dear Ann, Mike and the entire Day Family,
It was with great sadness that I heard of Graham's recent passing. I offer my sincere condolences. I worked many years with Mike and I heard many fascinating and memorable stories of Sir Graham. When I had the honour and privilege of being appointed as the Judge Advocate General (JAG) of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in 2010, I began a search for the Legal Branch's next Colonel Commandant. I was looking for one of Canada's top lawyers to help mentor Canada's legal officers and to help promote military law and the rule of law. I reached out to Graham, through Mike, and he responded immediately to the call to service...as he has done many times in career. Graham served as Colonel Commandant from 2011-2015 with great pride, professionalism and loyalty to the Legal Branch, CAF and Canada. He was selfless in his service and always made time for me and all of the officers, non-commissioned members and civilian staff of the Office of the JAG (OJAG). He made many useful contributions and provided much sage advice. He made important and lasting contributions to military law. We also had many long chats about the state of his beloved Blue Jays. He was everything we could have asked for as a kind, caring, and insightful Colonel Commandant. I could never thank him enough for his sacrifices and accepting a role that he could have easily turned down. The OJAG, the CAF and Canada were much better off for his unselfish service. He will be sorely missed but he left us so many great and inspiring memories. Take care. FIAT JUSTITIA! (Let Justice Prevail)

I didn’t realize until recently how important it is to share memories and to ensure that we send them to friends who have experienced the “passing” of a loved one.
Recently my husband passed and the memories sent have really given me such comfort.
So I would like to share a memory of happenings that Graham and I experienced when we were pre-schoolers and kindergarten students.
My family lived next door, in the west end of Halifax .He and I discovered a genuine interest in “space”. Surprising, eh? We found an old radio tube and it became our space ship and we travelled the universe. How very exciting.
We met later in life when we were both very mature, with careers, family, etc. and we shared a genuine amusement in the memories of our space voyages, with our radio tube, next to the rose bush in the rear garden. Oh how young we were and truly delighted with our adventures.
Hopefully this shared memory will add to your many memories and reflect an amusing and perhaps a different insight into his life as a young boy.

Sincere condolences on your loss.
I remember with affection many talks with Graham as he gave me a lift home. He never patronised me for my youthful enthusiasms, and treated my immature opinions with a respect they surely did not merit.
It was lovely to see Sir Graham and you, Lady Anne, at John Littler's house 12 years ago.
With fond memories of the 1970s at St Kilda and Abernethy, in Birkenhead.

I met Graham Day when I took his course in Ocean Shipping during his teaching days at Dalhousie University in the late 1970s. At the end of that course, Graham recommended me to Transport Canada for a summer internship. It started me on a 30 year journey in government largely in marine policy. I am so grateful to Graham for his encouragement, advice and belief in me at that early point in my career.
The last time we met was over coffee in Windsor pre-Covid. He was very busy at that time, with numerous boards, a trip upcoming trip to Toronto and then off to New York for a play.
Still totally engaged on so many fronts, there really was nobody quite like him. An amazing individual who I will never forget.
Most sincerely, Janet Kavanagh

I first met Graham over fifty years ago when he and his colleague, Peter Mills, invited a fledgling group of shipbuilding engineers to plan the redevelopment of Cammel Laird shipyard. Over the next six years we often caught the red eye flight from Newcastle arriving in time for his famous full breakfast meetings held in the shipyard canteen. The large Construction Hall, built as a part of this work, latterly gave birth to the RRS Sir David Attenborough, a fitting tribute to Graham's vision. I have had the privilege of his friendship and experienced the kindness, humour, honesty, transparency and sheer competence which was the mark of the man and such a breath of fresh air. He and Peter introduced me to Nova Scotia and its shipyards where we carried out a number of studies for the Department of Development and I have loved Nova Scotia ever since. I later worked with Graham during his chairmanship of British Shipbuilders. Subsequently, when four of us bought out Swan Hunter during privatisation, it was Graham negotiating on the other side of the table. He was my mentor and something of a father figure and I miss him dreadfully. My wife, daughters and I joined Graham and Ann for lunch at their house in Hantsport, sampling their wonderful hospitality - and of course Nova Scotian lobster. Graham was a great man and a great Canadian.

I only came to know Graham well within the last ten years or so of his life, but what a valued friend and mentor he came to be. I so appreciated our "fireside chats" and any other opportunities to share thoughts on various topics.
I was particularly honoured to have played a role in arranging the publishing of his biography and the wonderful insights I gained about his life through my first read of the manuscript.
I will miss his generosity, boundless encouragement and wonderfully honed sense of humour.
I left every conversation with Graham richer for it and am so grateful for the opportunity.

My Dad (Anton Forrest) worked with Graham at Cammell Laird and British Shipbuilders in the 1970’s and early 1980’s and their wonderful working relationship was matched by a deep friendship and long relationship between our families.
I remember the Day’s visiting our family home in the mid-1970’s. I was studying at London University and had an essay to write on Japanese Society. It was pertinent as Japan was outbidding international rivals for shipbuilding contracts at the time. Graham spotted a book by an esteemed Japanese academic who developed the theory of vertical integration. The book may have been mercifully short (maybe 150-200 pages?) but I struggled to get through it, never mind to understand its significance.
Graham took himself to a corner of the room to read. My Mum, Ann, Debbie and Donna and I chatted without him whilst Dad and Michael hurled themselves around the garden on one of their many, made-up adventure games(!). He finished the book, summed up its importance and potential application to business just before food was served. I couldn’t believe it!
In business many will remember Graham’s vision and ability to focus on broad strategy. In my small way I can vouch for his ability to speed read, take in and understand huge amounts of information!
What an incredible life he had. He leaves a wonderful family and an outstanding legacy. On behalf of the Forrest’s, I’m proud and thankful that we counted him as a great personal and family friend.

I had no finer professor in business school than Sir Graham Day. (Dalhousie MBA class of ’79.) His wisdom, experience, irreverence, charm and street smarts were incomparable. To the point so well made in his fabulous obituary, he told the men in our class that he’d not likely hire any of them but would hire all the women in a heartbeat. His brand of respect for women, leadership role modelling and behaviour were all rare then and infrequently seen in my career.
He gave me invaluable counsel on weighing the merits of various job offers at graduation and stepped up when I asked for career advice at 10 and 20 years after that. Always wise and straight-shooting counsel. We had the sheer delight of having lunch with Graham and Ann in Mahone Bay a few years ago, still sharp and the best of company.
I can’t say I’ve met anyone who matched his extraordinary intellectual range and emotional intelligence. It was such a privilege to have known him. May he rest in peace.

We quickly formed a good friendship with both Graham and Ann which proved to be long lasting. During their time in the U.K., we spent a number of good times with them. On their return to Canada, we remained in regular contact. In later life, on his occasional visits to London Graham made a point of inviting a group of us, his old friends, to dinner at his hotel. Sir Graham Day was one of my heroes. As an ex-Brit, I’d long admired his no-nonsense efforts during the 1980s and 1990s to revitalize key-but-moribund industries “back home”. I was in awe of his talents, business acumen and people skills. No wonder Margaret Thatcher (another of my heroes) sought him out to help put the “great” back in Great Britain. His cheeky solution to a management-labour impasse at a British shipyard still makes me want to stand up and applaud him. I met Sir Graham just once, on one of the most-memorable days of my life. When I graduated from Dalhousie in 1994, it was Sir Graham who handed me my diploma. It was all could do not to ask him to join me for a beer afterwards, to thank him for all he had done for my homeland. Rest in peace, sir; we shall not see your likes again. Deepest condolences to your family.

He was a truly great mentor.
We often don’t end up on the life path we begin or have the dreams we plan. Sir J. Graham Day was a cornerstone, a foundation for so many students at Dalhousie, students with dreams or seeking new directions on their journeys in life. I was only one of a very large cast of characters who were the recipients of this great mentor’s wisdom. I went back to school for a change of direction but on graduation, I could not find a position in my chosen field. Sir Graham saw promise in me and took me under his wing. He convinced me that the world of shipping was infinitely more fascinating than international banking and, as they say, the rest is history. It was the beginning of what I like to think of as a long-term debt I can never repay. He helped so many of my fellow students, the students I later taught, the students he ‘capped during his time as Dalhousie Chancellor, and those who received needed financial support from the scholarship fund he established at Dalhousie in 2010. His ‘interfering for free’ (on the back of his business cards) will be missed by all who knew him.
