Obituary of Gwendolyn Margaret Thompson

Please share a memory of Gwendolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Passed away peacefully, with her grandson, Cory, by her side, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in St. Croix, Hants Co., on November 4, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lenora May (Sweet) Brown.

Gwen was a machine operator and trainer at the Nova Scotia Textiles Mill until her retirement and was known for her impeccable piecework and high standards. After her retirement, she enjoyed pursuing her love of country music, regularly playing guitar and singing at jams with a group of fellow enthusiasts, much to the delight of the neighbouring communities. She dearly loved her western movies, especially John Wayne, as well as her daily fix of “the soaps”, crossword puzzles, gardening, cross-stitching, crocheting, knitting, etc.

A member of Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, Windsor, Gwen lived life on her own terms, fiercely independent with strength of character and a strong moral fibre. Her family was everything to her and she was loved as much as she loved them.

Gwen is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kathie (David); daughter-in-law, Cheryl MacBurnie; grandchildren, Pam (Blaine), Sherri (Terry), Aaron, Cory (Shelagh), Lenora and Michael; as well as many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Besides her mother, Gwen was predeceased by her sons, Roy and Rick MacBurnie; daughter, Judy Thompson; soulmate, Ronald Carr and special niece, Dorene Leary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where visitation will be held 10-11 a.m., Monday, June 23, followed immediately by a funeral service in the funeral home chapel, Celebrant Helen Lindsay officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. Interment will take place in Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. Donations in memory of Gwen may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 5826 South St., Halifax, NS B3H 1S6 or a charity of one’s choice.
