Obituary of Gregory David Lawrence Shaffer

Please share a memory of Gregory to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gregory David Lawrence Shaffer, of Granville Ferry, announce his passing. Greg died peacefully, at home, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the age of 75. Born February 21, 1950, he was the son of the late Lawrence David and Thelma Adelia (Prosser) Shaffer.

Greg leaves behind his daughters, Christina Shaffer (Todd Grant), Halifax and Karla Shaffer, Wolfville; as well as, grandchildren, Gallagher, Azealia and Torey, who made him so proud.

Greg was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, developing a lifelong appreciation for nature with time spent at his family’s maple sugar camp. He was a talented photographer, resourceful home builder, confident marksman and avid traveller. He had a sharp sense of humor and dark wit and a strength and stubborn resilience that helped him weather any storm.

In his career, Greg worked as a camera operator and broadcast technician, especially cherishing his time and the camaraderie of his co-workers at CHUM and Much in Toronto and CBC Halifax.

With a keen ear for languages, Greg relished any opportunity to brush off his Spanish in conversation. His travels through Mexico and Central America in his twenties were a source of lasting memories and vivid stories - possibly one involving smuggling a parrot into Nicaragua, which we can neither confirm nor deny. Of all his travels, closest to his heart were his winters in Santa Teresa, Brazil, which he spent navigating the colourful bondes (streetcars) and winding streets, enjoying good company and a cold beer in the Rio heat and developing enduring local friendships.

In retirement, Greg settled near Annapolis Royal, a town he loved, where he was surrounded by a wide circle of friends who meant so much to him. In recent years, he could often be found enjoying a peaceful afternoon on the wharf, dropping by to visit friends throughout town and sharing stories over a pint at his favourite pub. His family are comforted by the warm sense of community he built in Annapolis and the many heartfelt memories shared by those who knew him.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). Greg requested no formal funeral, wishing instead to be remembered with fondness and cheer by those who knew and loved him. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to carry forward an act of kindness for someone in your community. Please raise a glass in Greg’s memory. He will be dearly missed.
