Obituary of Richard Edmund Skinner
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Skinner, of Mount Uniacke, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Saturday, May 31, 2025 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, at the age of 86. Born July 16, 1938, in Glace Bay, Rick was a son of the late Richard and Daisy (Roberts) Skinner.
At the young age of 16, he left Cape Breton to pursue a trade education in Halifax - an early sign of the drive and ingenuity that would define his life. Rick went on to found Electromec Limited, where he dedicated his career to marine electrical design. A true problem-solver and creative thinker, his work contributed to innovations in the marine industry and his passion for engineering never waned.
Outside of his profession, Rick was a gifted woodworker. He spent countless hours in his workshop crafting beautiful pieces, which he proudly sold at craft shows. Whether it was wood, wire or ideas, Rick was always building something - often with a curious eye toward clean energy and practical inventions. His home was a living testament to his projects, complete with backup generators and experimental solutions.
He cherished time spent on camping trips with family and friends - always with a guitar close at hand. Around the fire, he would strum familiar tunes, share stories and sing along with whoever was nearby. These moments, filled with laughter, music and connection, were among his favorites.
A familiar face at the local store, Rick loved to sit with his friends “telling lies”. He had a great pride in his community and any who struck up a conversation with him will remember his quick wit and sense of humour.
Rick is survived by his wife, Donna (Simmons); daughters, Darlene (Tim) Page and Leanne (Michael) Jewett; he was a devoted Poppy to Katelyn (Keith) and Matt (Colleen). He is also survived by his brother, David (Donna); nephew, Devin and will be remembered fondly by his loyal dog, Kirby. Rick will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Shelley and Francine for their support and care.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). Further details will follow regarding a celebration of life to be held on July 26.
