Maxine and family,
My sincere sympathy to you all in the loss of a wonderful man.
My memories go back to my early days in Windsor after Fred and I started the Pisiquid Canoe Club . For some years , Don would bring some of his students for an afternoon of canoe instruction. I was a volunteer instructor and life guard for those times and always enjoyed them.
I also enjoyed conversations with him whenever we met at the grocery store in later years.
He was a fine man and a great teacher.

Donnie was someone you will never forget. We shared many stories of New Germany and everyone we both knew through the years. I only found him 7 years ago but it seemed like we knew each other a lot longer. At first we would talk for hours on the phone before meeting. It was Stephanie who called me, she's so smart for looking us up on Canada411. When I first found out about Donnie, by mistake I guess. No one during my life time said a thing about my family being not who I thought they were. A cousin of mine and then my nephew starred me in his direction. I am so glad for DNA. Being part of his family was the best gift I could have ever gotten. My brother I will miss your calls and seeing you so very often. The ones you left behind will think of you often with a tear in our eyes, but we will have many a good story of when you were with all of us.

To the Whynot family i extend my most sincere condolences. I was a student of his at WRHS and he truly was a very good teacher and mentor. Another posted a condolence about his fairness. Well me and a friend DM were playing hookie one morning and were sitting up at Fort Edward looking at the school while consuming some spiritual drink. DM suddenly remembered that we were supposed to be umpiring some intermural . softball game at lunch. We hustled back to school in time to do our duty. Donnie came out watched our performance for about 5 minutes shook his head and went back in side. He never said a word to either of us about it. Later on as i joined up with Bud Thompson as a sales rep for Thompson's Transfer, Bud would have a fun Poker night of which Donnie was a regular. Now he goes to take his chips at the table with Bud, Rollie, and Jacques who are waiting for him to rejoin the game. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.

So sorry to hear of Donnie's passing.
We had the opportunity to meet Donnie and Maxine approximately 35 years ago.
We became friends immediately. The friendship got better has the years went by.
After I got to know Donnie, I always wished that we could all have had teachers like him. He always left me with the impression that " he cared".
To help somebody else was never an inconvenience for him.
The summary of his community involvement is an indicator of how he wanted to make a difference in the lives of others.

I certainly enjoyed catching up with you during my recent visits. We shared some time-worn stories and laughs from our almost twenty years of teaching physical education together. Many great memories that I often recall that bring a smile to my face. I learned so much from working with you. All of those years of teaching and coaching side by side with never a serious disagreement, speaks to what a cooperative and collaborative teacher you were. You garnered tremendous respect from the kids who you taught and coached, but I respected you more for the care, time and dedication you put into your job.
You loved your occupation.
An old saying is very apt for you, Don Whynot: “When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

We both have fond memories of Donnie from school days as well as from the curling club. Colin was lucky enough to have him as a volleyball coach when we finished second in the province for 2 years in a row. We also had a number of curling adventures to bonspiels over the years. He was always one to have a great chat with whether it be about cranberry picking or some other adventure he had been on.

Mr Whynot was my favourite teacher for all my years of school. I had a number of great teachers but no other compared to him. Mr Whynot was so soft spoken and really cared about us. Funny story, that proved students were his priority. We were involved in a winter carnival ball hockey game in the new gym in WRHS. My brother and a good friend of ours got into a shoving match and it started to escalate. Mr Whynot came into the gym and shut the game down. We went into the locker room to change and my brother and our friend were still getting into it. Just as Luke would calm down, Our buddy would get worked up and vice versa. Mr Whynot, must have heard the ruckus and came into the locker room just as my buddy threw his shoe at Luke. Luke ducked and the shoe hit Mr Whynot in the face. His glasses fell off, his eye was already swollen. When he looked up, his eyes were wide with rage. I thought, someone is going to lose their life today! He collected himself and asked our friend and Luke to his office. I was, thinking this is more than just a suspension. They came out of the office both in tears but it wasn’t because they were scared or sad or even in trouble. Mr Whynot talked to them about their friendship and how good friends we all were and that we should get over the fight. By this time we realized his glasses were broken and his eye was already black. He demanded that if we are pressed by our principal asking what happened, we were to deny everything. Do not admit to anything, as Mr Whynot knew this situation would probably be more than a suspension. He held that secret his whole career and I remember years later after graduating all three of us ran into him. We talked about it and he laughed and said he knew we were hockey players and the fight would be forgotten about by us in minutes. He knew we were good kids and he did not want us to get in trouble. He was pressed by our principal that whole year and he would not admit to anything. I know this is a long story but it was never forgotten by us. He cared about his students and it showed. There was nobody who cared more. He was an amazing man and a great teacher. RIP Mr Whynot. You made a difference.

My half brother, my brother no matter we were blood. We’ve had many a story and remembrances over the past 7 years of knowing each other. I am so thankful for all the happy times we shared together as a family. I am going to miss him so much it hurts my heart. He really was an awesome person and a wonderful brother. We shared the same birthday month, there were so many similarities with our two families it was unreal. It sure won’t feel the same without him.

Stephanie, I am sorry to hear about your dad. He was such a driving force in physical education in schools. Every time I saw him he was actively engaged with students. Always smiling. He loved his job. He left a lasting impression on hundreds of Hants County young people. The only thing more important to him than his students was his family, the centre of his life.

Sorry to hear this news. Don was a frequent visitor to the fishing camp my Dad and Garwin Smith owned on Panuke Lake. Many lies were told and fishing lures lost. In later years my Dad was excited to visit Donnie’s camp for the great sauerkraut weekend. Another excuse to drink and be boys again.
I’m sure Dad and Garwin have already welcomed Don to the other side and they are planning a fishing trip already.
