Obituary of Binney Albert Parsons
The loved ones of Binney Albert Parsons are heartbroken to announce his unexpected passing on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in the Infirmary Site - QEII Hospital, Halifax.
He is survived by his beloved life partner, Julie Lawrence and precious son, Alastair Parsons; he loved them whole-heartedly.
He will be missed by sisters, Sally (Bill) Ferguson and Anne (Mike) Parsons Forbes; nieces, Sarah, Kate, Ellen and Emily; nephew, Andrew.
Binney was predeceased by his parents, Albert A. and Mary B. (Smith) Parsons.
Born on November 10, 1951 in the Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax, Binney’s young years were spent in Walton, Hants County. A sweet boy, he was inclined to be helpful and once put fish in the well, thinking they would eat flies and would keep the water fresh, which he hoped would be helpful to his mother.
The family moved to Windsor, Hants County in 1963 and he attended King’s College School. Life-long friends still tell stories of the wonder of watching him on the racetrack, always viewing him from behind as he effortlessly outstripped the other runners. There are also many stories of pranks and mischief (and that renowned speed as a runner came in handy), for he had a playful, quirky, soul. When his son was a toddler, the two would go out with a flashlight, searching for gnomes under garden shrubs after dark.
Blessed with curiosity, Binney followed several of his enduring passions at university, attaining a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University. He was also an appraiser and attained qualifications in real estate and in investing.
He followed numerous interests throughout his life - art, antiques, writing, fitness, investing - interests that he delighted in sharing with others. He was an early adopter of healthy eating and fitness, long before they became commonplace and he was a keen promoter of both, given half a chance and a semi-willing listener.
Binney’s creativity showed up in all sorts of ways, both tangible and intangible. When Alastair was small, he wrote and illustrated a book to go with the gift of an antique train. His eye for beauty in antiques - ceramics, Persian carpets, pottery, paintings and folk art - was renowned.
Bin had an easy way of connecting with people; he could be dropped into any situation and engage with warmth, enthusiasm and an open heart. To be his friend or loved one was to know that you were loved for who you are and need never fear judgement. More than one person has said, on learning of his death, that no one knew them as Binney did and that they felt a piece of them was lost with him. He savoured the life and career his son is creating, his well-being and his sound character, with a sense of wonder and gratitude.
Binney’s joy about what his future held with Julie was boundless. Their life together was the fulfillment of so many dreams, and their love unreserved. His spirit, imagination and love for all things unique and beautiful will surely be reflected in their daughter, due in October.
Bin was ever a kind and generous spirit. His last years, in particular, were an inspiration in word and deed. He acted as God would have him act and therefore, became the most useful, loving, honest and empathetic version of himself that he had ever dreamed of being. He was a trusted caregiver, supporter, advisor and counselor to many. Through his selfless sharing of his journey to recovery, others were comforted and helped. He leaves us the gift of the rare example of someone at peace with himself, with others and with God.
