Obituary of James Arthur Grant Bremner
James Arthur Grant Bremner, 81, of Upper Falmouth, died peacefully, March 27, 2025 at the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born August 18, 1943 in Windsor, he was the son of the late Dorothy and Ted Bremner of Upper Falmouth.
Jim spent his life on the farm and in the woods. He attended the 2-room schoolhouse on Castle Frederick Road where fond memories were made and legends were born. From there he carried on to King’s College (now KES), Windsor Academy and Windsor Regional High. Many wonderful stories were told of Jim’s school days; he always said how grateful he was for growing up in the time he did with the friends he had.
After high school, Jim went on to the NSAC in Truro where adventures and good times continued. It was there he met Frances. They returned to Falmouth and married in 1966. Together they ran a dairy farm then later began a beef and forestry business while raising their four daughters.
Jim was involved in many organizations in his lifetime. As a member of the Hants County Federation of Agriculture, NS Federation of Agriculture, Windsor Agricultural Society, NS Cattle Producers, Canadian Cattle Producers and NS Provincial Marshland Commission, he became a leader and advocate for his industry. His love of forestry led him to become a silviculture contractor, woodlot manager and mentor for others keen to learn about the woods. He was very proud to be awarded regional woodlot owner of the year in 1995 and honoured as manager of 2019 ‘s provincial winner.
Jim was a gifted story- teller. Local history was his specialty, and he could talk for hours with those interested. From military, political, archaeological, natural history and folklore, he knew it all. If he didn’t know, he knew someone who did. In later years, he followed his passion for history to see more of our beautiful country, with trips to Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon. Last year, with Ruby, he made it to Alaska, a dream he held for many years. He always met someone he could talk to and learn from, especially if there was a machine operating or something being built.
Jim is survived by his sister, Jean; his four daughters, Erin (Greg), Robin (Chris), Alyson (Nick) and Kathryn (Donnie); his 11 grandchildren (Erik, Alex, Ellie, Levi, Marijka, Iris, Myra, Seth, Annika, Jozefina and Kees) and his partner, Ruby. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances. Jim will be remembered for his easygoing nature, love of conversation, generosity and humour. He was a friend to many and will be dearly missed.
