It is with heavy hearts that we announce the first anniversary of the passing of Paul Michael Primeau. He was a beloved father, devoted husband, loving brother, extraordinary artist, dedicated Sundancer, and respected sweat lodge conductor. Paul left us on January 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, spiritual guidance, and extraordinary art that will continue to inspire and captivate future generations.
A long-time resident of Falmouth, Nova Scotia, Paul was born on November 1, 1948, in Peterborough, Ontario, to Gerard and Jacqueline Primeau. Paul was a dear brother to Gail Hetherton (née Primeau), Fred Primeau, Wayne Primeau, Carol Higgins (née Primeau), Anne Primeau, Peter Primeau, Dennis Primeau, David Primeau, Douglas Primeau, Michael Primeau, and Johnny Primeau. He was a loving father to Renée Primeau, Geneviève Primeau, and John Paul Primeau, and grandfather to Phoebe and Elliot (Renée’s children). He was a loving husband to his former wife Patti Murphy (mother of Renée) and his recently deceased wife Shirley Flynn-Primeau (mother of Geneviève and John Paul). He is greatly missed by his family and friends.
After graduating from Ryerson University and Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto, Paul moved to Halifax and started his family and his career teaching art at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Paul lived the life of seven men. He was a fabulous father and a loving husband, an incredible artist, a football coach, a Sundancer, a sweat lodge conductor, and a spiritual leader. These passions served him well, and his enthusiasm lives on in his children and grandchildren who share his connection to art, sports, and the spiritual world.
As a husband, Paul was the heart of his family. His unwavering love, support, and guidance shaped the lives of his children and brought immense joy and strength to his wife Shirley. His family will forever hold dear the memories of his laughter, his comforting presence, and his boundless affection.
As a father, Paul was a pillar of strength and a source of endless love and support. His children will forever cherish the memories of his warm hugs, wise advice, and unwavering encouragement. He taught them the values of kindness, resilience, and the importance of family.
As a brother, Paul was a source of strength and companionship. His siblings will remember him for his kindness, his loyalty, and the countless moments of shared joy and support. He was a true friend and confidant, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
In the world of art, Paul was a true visionary. His works, filled with vibrant colors and profound meanings, touched the hearts of many. His creativity knew no bounds, and his passion for art was evident in every piece he created. Paul’s art will continue to inspire and bring joy to those who encounter it.
Paul showed an early talent for painting, which blossomed into a remarkable career. He was known for his unique style and ability to convey profound emotions through his work. Over the years, Paul exhibited his art in numerous galleries, art shows, and shops, earning accolades and admiration from peers and art lovers alike. He was devoted to preserving Nova Scotia’s proud architectural heritage in art, crafting houses, historical buildings, lighthouses, and landscapes. He created a successful business called FolkStone Pottery, which afforded him the opportunity to work from his home studio. The only thing he loved more than art was his family. He loved being a stay-at-home dad, where he was able to spend time teaching, mentoring, and coaching his children. He also enjoyed creating household items such as bowls, plates, cups, and furniture. These keepsakes will be cherished by family and friends in the years to come.
As a Sundancer, Paul demonstrated immense dedication and spiritual commitment. His participation in the sacred ceremonies was a testament to his deep connection with his culture and traditions. He danced with a heart full of gratitude and reverence, embodying the spirit of his ancestors.
Paul was also a revered sweat lodge conductor, guiding many through the healing and transformative experiences of the sweat lodge. His gentle presence and profound wisdom provided comfort and clarity to all who sought his guidance. He created a safe and sacred space for healing, reflection, and renewal.
Paul had a generous spirit and a kind heart, always willing to share his knowledge and support with his friends, neighbors, and community. He spent countless hours completing household renovations and repairs, ministering and praying for those in need, and helping out where he was needed. Paul had a very outgoing and charismatic personality and was an active member of his community. He always enjoyed a cup of coffee with friends, offering advice and adding humor to the discussion.
Paul's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His love, art, and spiritual teachings have left an indelible mark on the world. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
