Obituary of Frederick Joseph Whare

Please share a memory of Frederick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
WHARE, Frederick Joseph "Fred" Age 61, of Dartmouth. Born in the Halifax Infirmary on May 17, 1954, Fred was the son of the late Clyde Whare and the late Elsie (Nauffts) (Whare) Laybolt as well as much-loved step-son of the late Norman Laybolt. He started school while living in Eastern Passage. Moving to Truro with his mother and brother, Albert, after his father passed away, he remembered having to pick rocks out of the potato fields alongside his brother at age five and six. The family moved to Rose Street in Dartmouth, with new treasured sister, Esther. Rose Street was always Fred's home. He became a choir boy with St. Peter's Catholic Church and experienced the teaching of the nuns while they boxed his ears at Park school. He and the "Shack Gang" roamed the streets in their free time. Fred loved the woods and from an early age spent as much time as he could fishing and hunting, especially in Pleasant Valley and at the camp in Liscombe. He enjoyed life to the fullest, loving his Keith's and his smokes and the gambling machines at the "Big House" and later Penny on the Park and Parkside. Fred was employed at many places over the years but driving a truck was his favourite. The Guildford's truck carried many deer off the Magazine Hill over the years. Among the things that he collected the most important was his family and friends. The best event in his life was the birth of his son, Joseph Jordan (Tracy Schmidt). Coming a close second were his chosen children, David LeFave, Jamie Archibald (Faye), Bobbyee Archibald; of course, his nieces, Selina Whare (Casey Publicover), Shannon (Moxsom) Hall (Matt), Kelly (Moxsom) Webster (Nathanial); his nephew, Evan Moxsom (Donna). Fred's baby sister Esther (Laybolt) (Moxsom) McLaren will miss him dearly. Fred loved his great-nephew, Rhuen, considering him a gift. He also leaves behind supportive and wonderful friends, Debbie Gray, Bev Turner, Donalda Hatch, Joanne Sinclair, Mike Henry, Cindy and Wayne Moxsom among many others. As well as, step-sisters, Teresa Laybolt and Shelley Berry; step-brothers, Patrick and Normie Laybolt; Aunt Kay, and Aunt Judy. Fred also had a special place in his heart for his Uncle, Roy Nauffts. One of his favourite things to do was sit on Debbie's picnic table and eat her fresh tomatoes, leaving his empty beer can so she knew he was there. Wherever Fred is now, we are sure he is playing a game of crib with Jimmy Jewers and Murray Demerchant or drinking a Keith's and putting a loonie in the machine with Bim Moore, or stealing salt and pepper shakers from the Lamplighter Tavern, sharing them with Walter Moxsom. He might be catching up with Rick Mayjan, Marcel D'Entremont, or Mel Comeau over a beer. Or maybe he's teaching Sue Morash how to drive. Whatever he's doing, he'll make time for all those who passed before him, checking in with his Mom, Dad, Norm, brothers, Albert and Bruce, step-sister, Norma, Aunt May, and Uncle Joe Whare. Fred was a kind and gentle soul who believed in the afterlife. He will continue to watch over those for whom he cared to ensure they are safe and well. He will smile at the antics of his family and friends in his quiet way, cheering them on without saying a word, nodding his head as he listens. He said his final "Ciao for now!" to us at 8:30 on Friday, May 13th at the Dartmouth General, and we know that his pain has finally ended. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There will be a private gathering held at a later date. Donations in memory of Fred may be made to a charity of one's choice. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting: www.demontfamilyfuneralhome.ca
