 ATWOOD, James E. "Jim" - 86, Berwick West, Kings Co., passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2012, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cape Sable Island, Shelburne Co., he was a son of the late Burton A. and Matilda R. (Quinlan) Atwood.Jim was a veteran of the Second World War, serving his country from 1941 – 1946 with the 16th. Battery – 12th. Field Regiment, 3rd. Division, R.C.A. in England, Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a member of the Kings County Veterans Club and had worked as a carpenter in the C.E. Section at C.F.B. Greenwood, until his retirement.Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Doris E. (Luce) Atwood; sons, Gordon (Sandra), Berwick West; James "Babe" (Ellen), Brampton, Ont.; daughter, Kathleen (Wayne) Best, One Hundred Mile House, B.C.; grandchildren, Gregory, Debbie, Gordie, Wayne, Adam and Donnie; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen DiProfio, Berwick; step-brother, Henry (Kathleen) Shand, Truro; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by grandchildren, Alison Best and David Atwood; brother, Phelton; sisters, Naamah Shand; Irma Jean Baxter and Mary Dunn.Arrangements have been entrusted to Bryce Johnstone and DeMont Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Service (902-538-8317). Visitation will take place from 7 - 9 p.m., Sunday evening in the annex of the Berwick Baptist Church, 265 Commercial St., Berwick. Funeral service will take place from the church at 2 p.m., Monday, April 9. Rev. Marilyn Rose officiating, with burial in the Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Victorian Order of Nurses, Annapolis Valley Branch.
